The Pittsburgh Steelers had an up-and-down season in 2023. While they made the playoffs, it was a struggle every week to score points. The team will have a new quarterback under center in 2024, and they have made other additions to the roster to try and compete in a tough AFC North. One of those players was cornerback Cam Sutton. The Detroit Lions released him after some off-the-field issues involving domestic violence. Pittsburgh picked him back up, but it looks like they will be without him for a good chunk of the season. The league suspended Sutton for eight games for violating the personal conduct policy.
Pittsburgh Steelers Cam Sutton Suspended
Regardless of what happens in the court systems, the NFL has the right to suspend players if they violate the Personal Conduct Policy. The league determined this was the case with Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cam Sutton. “The NFL investigated the March incident involving Sutton and determined he violated the Personal Conduct Policy,” a statement released by the NFL said.
In March, Cam Sutton had a warrant out for his arrest for aggravated battery and domestic violence. He eventually turned himself into the police in Florida. The felony charges were dropped, which means the cornerback will likely avoid jail time. However, the league wants to try and curb this type of behavior. The minimum suspension for domestic violence is six games, but the league must have determined Sutton’s case warranted more. He will be eligible to come back following the week 8 matchup against the New York Giants.
2024 Outlook
The Pittsburgh Steelers always seem to find a way to be competitive. However, this year will be one of the toughest yet. They have one of the most brutal stretches of any team in 2024. Weeks 11-18 have them playing the Ravens, Browns, and Bengals twice as well as games against the Eagles and Chiefs. All of those teams are gunning for the playoffs. If the Pittsburgh Steelers get off to a slow start, it could be an impossible task to get back into the playoff picture.
The Cam Sutton news is not surprising. However, if he does come back after week 8, he will be a boost for the team during their toughest stretch.
