Philadelphia 76ers Add Another Free Agent; Sign Sharpshooting Forward To 4 Year Deal

Philadelphia 76ers Caleb Martin

The Philadelphia 76ers came into the offseason with cap space. GM Daryl Morey has used it to totally remake the roster. Early on in free agency, they landed Paul George, but the team has been busy signing many other free agents. The team isn’t done. On Saturday, the team signed former Miami Heat forward Caleb Martin to a four-year deal.

Caleb Martin came onto many people’s radar during his performance with the Heat in the conference finals. In a seven-game series against the Boston Celtics, he averaged 19.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game on 60.2% shooting overall and 48.9% from the 3-point line. Outside of that series, he has been known for his defense and sharpshooting capabilities. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the deal is for four years and $32 million.

It is another solid piece for the Philadelphia 76ers. Reports indicated the Heat wanted to retain him and offered him more money. However, he decided he wanted to join a team that is skyrocketing up the Eastern Conference rankings. In order to make the deal work, the team waived Paul Reed.

Another Quality Signing

Any team that has championship aspirations needs quality pieces around their stars. There is no doubting the skills of George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, but that isn’t enough to win a championship. Morey knows this and has signed many quality role players. Kelly Oubre Jr. was signed soon after Paul George inked his max deal. Then, the team signed a quality backup center in Andre Drummond and a backup guard in Eric Gordon. These aren’t pieces that by themselves look great but, in the context of the team, look really savvy.

The goal for the East is to take down the Boston Celtics. The defending champs will bring back the same team as last year it seems. We’ve seen the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks make big moves in order to compete. The Milwaukee Bucks still have Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. However, no team will look more different than Philadelphia. The Caleb Martin signing is another good one for the team, and it will be interesting to see what Daryl Morey does next.
