The Minnesota Timberwolves had their best season in years. They made it to the conference finals before getting bounced by the Dallas Mavericks. Part of the problem was the lack of scoring outside of Anthony Edwards. Karl Anthony-Towns had a historically bad series, and Rudy Gobert is often an offensive liability in the playoffs. They decided to swing for the fences and traded with the San Antonio Spurs. Minnesota got the eighth overall pick and took Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham.

The Minnesota Timberwolves sent a 2031 unprotected first-round pick and a 2030 pick swap to the Spurs for the eighth overall pick. They grabbed the talented Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham. The former Wildcat filled up the stat sheet, averaging 15.2 points, 3.9 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, shooting 47.5% from the field and 44.4% from the 3-point range. He had a season-high 35 points in a loss to Tennessee.
This is a swing for the fences for the Minnesota Timberwolves. They were so close to the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance but couldn’t shut down the duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. If the team can have a similar season in 2024-25, they should be a contender for the Western Conference.
Where Does This Put The Timberwolves?
It’s hard to say that a rookie makes the team a favorite, but Ron Dillingham is a perfect fit for this team. There is little question about the team’s defense. Gobert and many other lockdown defenders can stop any offense in its tracks. However, no matter how good a defense is, a team has to score. The issue the Minnesota Timberwolves had was if Anthony Edwards didn’t have it that night, the team couldn’t put up enough points.
It’s hard to depend on a rookie to be the final piece on a championship roster. However, Dillingham has the potential to be a perfect piece for the Wolves. For the Spurs, they get some picks that are not going to do anything for awhile but could benefit them down the road. If the window closes and Minnesota decides to tank, these picks could be valuable to a contending Spurs team.
