Today, the Minnesota Twins announced that they have placed star third baseman Royce Lewis on the 10-Day Injured List. Lewis sustained the injury last night while running the bases in the Twins’ 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The team promoted hotshot prospect Brooks Lee from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move.
Lewis is No Stranger to Injury
This is a disappointing setback for both Lewis and the Twins. As mercurial as his career has been, he has never escaped the injury bug. The trail of injuries has followed him ever since he entered professional baseball.
It started in the minors, where he suffered a torn ACL in 2021, forcing him to miss an entire season. The following year, in his rookie campaign with the big club, he suffered another ACL tear in the same knee after running into the centerfield wall in a game against the Kansas City Royals. He would go on to miss 189 games. The Twins and their fans were starting to wonder if they would ever find their prize prospect healthy again.
And the Injuries Continue
But he came back strong in 2023 until a month into his return, he suffered another setback. Running to first base in a game against the Baltimore Orioles in early July, Royce Lewis sustained a left oblique strain, which caused him to miss the next 36 games.
Once again, the resilient Lewis returned stronger than ever by hitting three grand slams in 18 days to help propel the Twins into the playoffs. But not before a right hamstring injury would force him to miss the last 11 games of the regular season. In true Lewis fashion, he would return to the Twins lineup for the playoffs, where he launched back-to-back home runs in his first two at-bats. And he was a major reason the team would move on to the second round of the playoffs.
Royce Lewis Fares No Better in 2024
Royce Lewis would start the 2024 season with a bang, hitting a tater in his first at-bat. But in the same game, he would suffer a right quad injury trying to score from first base on Carlos Correa’s double. This time, he missed 10 weeks of action in a recovery that he described as the hardest of his career.
Another amazing chapter of his career was written on his return to the team. In 22 games in June, Royce Lewis hit nine homers, drove in 15 runs, and produced a slash line of .337/.635/.972. And he and Correa led a resurgent Twins offense that hopes to challenge Cleveland for the AL Central title.
Twins are Hopeful
The Twins estimate that Royce Lewis will miss about three weeks of action with his groin injury. While obviously not ideal, Minnesota hopes to have him back and healthy for the season’s final two months. Until then, Lee and Jose Miranda will hold down the fort at the hot corner and try to do their part to keep the team in playoff contention.
