Twins Blast Nationals 10-0

Twins

The Minnesota Twins, seething from a seven-game losing streak, took it out on the Washington Nationals tonight. Their 10-0 win in Washington had to release some of the pent-up and not-so-pent-up frustration that had invaded the Twins clubhouse.

Twins Play Home Run Derby

Nothing gets a team out of its doldrums better than an old-fashioned home run derby. Byron Buxton started the fun in the second with a solo shot to right field off Nats starter Patrick Corbin. Corbin would suffer both an unlucky and unimaginable game this night.

Then, after Carlos Santana hit a fielder’s choice to score Willi Castro later in the second inning, Jose Miranda strode to the plate with Manuel Margot on first. He promptly launched a home run in the left field seats to increase Minnesota’s lead to 4-0. But the Twins were far from done on this long-awaited evening.

Not to be outdone, Buxton hit his second of the game with Carlos Correa on base, upping the Twin’s lead to 6-0. You could feel the frustration coming off of their bats as they continued to wipe those hitless innings out of their consciousness.

Santana doubled Kyle Farmer home in the sixth inning in a satisfying game for the ex-Cleveland All-Star, who has had an up-and-down campaign so far. Then a wild pitch plated Santana, and the rout was on.

Castro capped the scoring with a two-run dinger to right field that also scored Max Kepler, and the Twins walked away with a runaway win. This evening, their offensive output exceeded the total runs they had scored in the previous six games.

Ryan Gets the Win

Joe Ryan pitched seven scoreless innings to record his third win of the year. It was also the first game since June of last season that he had held an opponent scoreless. More importantly, he helped the Twins snap their longest losing streak since 2018.

His counterpart Corbin was not as fortunate. He pitched six innings, giving up nine hits, three walks, and eight earned runs. This outing pushed his ERA to a brutal 6.29. That constitutes the worst ERA among qualified starters in the major leagues

Rally Sausage is Back

Tonight’s hitting star, Buxton, proclaimed that the Rally Sausage was back. For the Twins and their fans, they hope that Buck is right. In a season that has been anything but predictable, the future frequent appearance of the Rally Sausage would be a sure sign of continued success.

“That was an enjoyable day at the ballpark, to say the least,” said Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli, who earned his 400th career victory. “A lot of guys wanted that, needed that, whatever you want to say. But it’s good to see so many guys contributing.”

“I’ve been overthinking a little bit,” Buxton said. “Today, just kind of went up there and didn’t try to do too much.”
