The Detroit Pistons have undergone some changes this offseason. Last offseason, there was optimism. Cade Cunningham was coming off an injury and finally looked healthy. The team hired Monty Williams, who had NBA Finals experience, to lead the team. The season could not have gone worse. They set the wrong kind of records, and it led to a front office shake-up. Many wondered whether Williams would keep his job. NBA insider Marc Stein revealed the “likely” fate of the head coach.
Detroit Pistons Monty Williams Likely Staying Per Marc Stein
If the Detroit Pistons moved on from Monty Williams, they would have to eat the rest of his contract, which would be $80 million. Stein reported that it is “likely” the team hangs onto their head coach despite the turmoil this season. There were bright spots throughout the year; often, coaches need a little time to implement their system and get comfortable with players. The Pistons hope that the team construction can improve with a new GM in the front office.
One of the reasons Stein believes he is staying is due to the hiring of elite shooting coach Fred Vinson. He spent 14 years in New Orleans and worked under Monty Williams for some of that time. It would make sense to hang onto the coach, who already has a working relationship with the new assistant. The Detroit Pistons hope that filling out the staff can bring more success this year.
The Right Decision?
This is a tough call. The Detroit Pistons were a league-worst 14-68 last year. That record included a 28-game losing streak. Williams did little to elevate a roster that has some talent in it. However, it is unfair to put all of the team’s struggles on the head coach. The same group of players didn’t perform much better last season. The front office could shoulder some of the blame. Even the players themselves need to take some responsibility. The Pistons hope that continuity will help them next season.
The Detroit Pistons have good pieces. Cunningham looks like the real deal, and players like Jalen Duran, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson showed flashes last year. Bench pieces like Marcus Sasser showed promise as well. Ultimately, it is going to take everyone, including Monty Williams, to improve next year. The pressure will be on. If the team does not improve next year, there will likely be huge changes.
