Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill isn’t shy about sharing what is on his mind. Whether it is about the game of football or his plans after he retires, the All-Pro receiver speaks his mind. The wide receiver market got a massive boost when Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson signed the largest contract for a non-quarterback in NFL history. In a recent interview, Hill threw some subtle shade at Jefferson over the deal.
Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill On Justin Jefferson Contract
The Miami Dolphins star admitted that seeing the Jefferson contract made him smile. When he signed his deal two years ago with Miami, Hill was the highest-paid receiver. Now, he wants to reset the market again. Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the two sides are working on a new deal.
“Let’s just say it’s safe to acknowledge that I’ve been in touch with (general manager) Chris Grier and (executive) Brandon Shore of the Dolphins,” Rosenhaus told Miami’s WSVN. “I have a fluid line of communication with them, and I’ve shared with them how Tyreek feels. And I’ll also reiterate that Tyreek has said that he would love to finish his career here with the Dolphins. Without getting into anymore specifics, the Dolphins know how we feel.”
Tyreek Hill seemed very complementary to Jefferson’s deal but did throw some subtle shade at the back end of the interview.
“We want to make sure it benefits both sides, and I want to help the team as much as I can. … Being greedy ain’t gonna help the team.”
That last line is a subtle jab at Jefferson. While Hill wants to maximize his money, he also wants to win a Super Bowl. He wants to make sure his deal helps his team as well as himself, something he may not think Jefferson is doing.
Was Jefferson Being Greedy?
I disagree with Tyreek Hill on this one. The Minnsota Vikings are in a unique position. They have a rookie quarterback who will be cheap for the next handful of years. This deal will run out before they have to pay their quarterback. Also, Justin Jefferson’s numbers speak for themselves. He isn’t just a good receiver. He is setting NFL records. His deal was well earned.
The Miami Dolphins have a decision to make with Hill. They obviously want him around as he is a huge part of their offense. However, money is a finite object in the NFL salary cap. Jaylen Waddle got an extension this offseason and Tua Tagovailoa is also in line for a massive payday. It will be interesting to see whether Hill takes his own advice and signs a more team-friendly deal.
