Breaking: San Francisco 49ers Running Back Christian McCaffrey Agrees To Huge Extension

San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffrey

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey agrees to a two-year extension with the team and is now the highest paid in the NFL at his position.

The former Offensive Player of the Year’s extension is worth $38 million in total, averaging $19 million per year across the two seasons. The 27-year-old featured weapon for the team will be under contract through 2027, as he has been the top-paid running back for the past five years.

McCaffrey will earn an additional $8 million compared to his previous deal in the first two seasons of the contract while adding $24 million in guarantees. This was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, as the All-Pro and Pro Bowl ball carrier will remain in San Francisco.

Schefter announced that Christian McCaffrey has agreed to this new extension, making a position that is normally not as valuable a premium, especially with the 49ers.

According to Spotrac, the San Francisco running back will earn a base salary of $11.8 million in 2024 and $12 million in 2025.

Now entering his ninth season, the veteran has dealt with injuries from 2020-2022, from his days with the Carolina Panthers before he was shipped to San Francisco. In 2023, McCaffrey had a career season, rushing for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground, along with 67 catches and 564 yards through the air, with seven touchdowns as a dynamic pass catcher.

Christian McCaffrey also averaged 5.4 yards per rush last year and will look forward to another shot at the Super Bowl with the 49ers.

Christian McCaffrey’s new deal gives him the highest average salary by $4 million more per year, compared to the previous highest from Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints.

Kamara still has the highest total value at $75 million over five seasons, as McCaffrey, the rushing leader from 2023, is still fourth on the list. Other running backs who found new homes this offseason round of the top 10 highest paid at the position.

However, Christian McCaffrey is purely different in the way he is used in head coach Kyle Shanahan‘s scheme and is at the top of the list of all running backs in the NFL.
