Philadelphia 76ers: Overpaid Tobias Harris Eligible for Free Agency | May 29, 2024

Tobias Harris Philadelphia 76ers

This season wasn’t the best for the Philadelphia 76ers. They lost in the first round to the New York Knicks, and it was clear that changes need to be made. One of these changes is Tobias Harris. Harris is set to be a free agent this offseason, leaving the 76ers with a decision to make on the power forward’s future. Should they keep the player that has been on their roster for the past six seasons?

Tobias Harris Stats for 2023-24 Season

This was not the greatest season for Tobias Harris. He averaged 17.2 points per game, 3.1 assists per game, and 6.5 rebounds per game. These aren’t the worst stats ever, but the problem is he disappeared in some of the Philadelphia 76er’s most important games. The 76ers need a player who can really support the roster if Joel Embiid goes down again.

In the series against the New York Knicks that sent the 76ers home, Harris was an absolute disaster. In his first game, he scored seven points in 31 minutes. In the second game, he played slightly better, with 10 points in 41 minutes. Next up was an eight-point game three, a ten-point game four, a 19-point game five, and an absolutely horrible zero-point game six with 29 minutes on the court. This isn’t something that can happen to a starting player on a team that is supposed to be a championship contender.

Philadelphia 76ers Overpaying Role Player

In 2019, the Philadelphia 76ers signed Tobias Harris to a $180 million contract for five years. This means he is making a solid $37.63 million a year. To put into perspective how crazy this contract is, Joel Embiid is making $213.3 million with a four-year contract, which is $47.61 million a year. These two players should have a much wider gap in what they’re making a year. Embiid is an All-Star. Yes, he has an injury problem, but he is consistently averaging 30+ points per game.

The year Tobias Harris signed this contract, he was averaging 19.6 points per game. Clearly, at the time, Harris earned this money. However, after his last playoff performance and a season full of ups and downs, his time should be up in Philadelphia.

Where Could Harris End Up If 76ers Don’t Resign

Despite the shaky season, Harris will probably be picked up by another team as a veteran presence in the locker room. A team that might want to pick him up is the Charlotte Hornets. They just lost one of their vets, Gordon Hayward, so adding another could be helpful. Another team that could be in search of a veteran would be the San Antonio Spurs

The problem is the teams that will be reaching out for vets will want one who can be a strong leader. Tobias Harris doesn’t give off that kind of energy. A veteran leader needs to be able to put up some sort of fight in an important game. There will most likely be more of a want for free agents like tough center Clint Capela or Klay Thompson.
