Rumor: Atlanta Hawks Looking to Trade Strong Veteran With 2-Year Contract Ending

Atlanta Hawks Clint Capela

This season, the Atlanta Hawks found themselves in a play-in position with hopes to make it into the playoffs. However, these hopes were squashed by the Chicago Bulls in game one. Their playoff history isn’t the greatest with them having long streaks of being knocked out in the first round.

Their lead scorer and All-Star, Trae Young, has done his best to lead his teammates in these tough battles, but it hasn’t panned out yet. Some believe it is time for Trae to call it quits and head to a new team, but there might be a different trade for the Hawks to make.

Clint Capela has been on the Atlanta Hawks since the 2020 season. The Swiss player started his NBA career with the Houston Rockets and has been in the league for 10 seasons. He’s been a steady force in the paint for a long time and has been a valuable player for the Hawks so far.

This season, Capela averaged 11.5 points per game, 10.6 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game. Those 10.6 rebounds put the center in 9th place for rebounds per game showing that he is great at grabbing boards. Since the 2017-18 season he has remained a stellar rebounder never dipping believe 10 rebounds per game.

Right now, the Atlanta Hawks need to make changes if they hope to keep Young on the team. He wants a ring and if Atlanta can’t get him one then there are plenty of other teams who’d like to have him on their roster. Clint Capela could be a solid role player for them to offer in a package deal with either another player or some draft picks.

The Hawks just signed the 23-year-old Onkyeka Okongwu to a four-year $61,980,000 contract which could be the biggest sign that Capela might be out the door. The 6’8″ center is young and has time to grow with the Hawks whereas the veteran Capela is now 30 and has a 2-year contract that is about to expire.

There is definitely a market for guys like Capela. He’s reliable on defense and can provide points off the bench. A team that should look at him is the Philadelphia 76ers. With starting center Joel Embiid always at risk of injury and their secondary being Mo Bamba the 76ers center position could use a player like Clint Capela.

What Atlanta Needs For Next Season

The Hawks need a jack of all trades in the wing department to play next to Trae Young and a more powerful defender underneath. This regular season the Hawks opponents averaged 120.5 points per game putting them in almost dead last for the category. If your defense is going to let up all of those points you need a player who can help put more on the board for your team.

Dejounte Murray became a much more consistent scorer this season, but that isn’t enough as seen by the play-in loss. Bogdan Bogdanovic is also a solid member of the team. However, they need more. They need a player who can lock down stars on defense to get the win.
