Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski believes he deserves to win the Ballon d’Or in 2020 and has said he would accept the award later. The former Bayern Munich striker was expected to win the Ballon d’Or in 2020 but it was cancelled due to Covid-19. He found the back of the net 55 times for Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 season, helping them win the treble. There is no doubt that the Poland international deserved to win the Ballon d’Or in the 2019-20 season. However, the emergence of COVID-19 led to the cancellation of the award ceremony.
The 2020 Ballon d’Or’s Cancellation Still Irritates Lewandowski
The former attacker for Bayern Munich was at the very peak of his game in 2020 and 2021, but he did not win the most desired individual award in the world. The Ballon d’Or ceremony was canceled in 2020 because of the Covid pandemic. This meant the Poland international would lose out despite scoring 55 goals across all competitions to help Bayern win the treble in 2019-20. Twelve months later, while still with Barcelona, Lionel Messi won his seventh Ballon d’Or, causing outrage that Lewandowski had not been acknowledged for his accomplishments.
Rumors are going around that the absent award might be given out, even though it was supposed to happen four years ago. Lewandowski proved that he is among the elite players in the world In the 2020-21 season. He not only surpassed Gerd Muller’s record for the most goals in a Bundesliga campaign but also went on to score an impressive 50 goals in all competitions the following year. Speaking to Sport BILD, Lewandowski said:
“Of course I would have liked to receive the Ballon d’Or award one day. It’s not that I’m angry or sad because this trophy is still missing. But my feeling is that it would have been my turn in one of the two years. In 2020 and 2021 I had the best years of my career.
“The one from 2021 belongs to Lionel Messi. I noticed that there are rumors about a subsequent award for 2020. This year was outstanding for me, I was at my highest level, we won everything. Let’s put it this way: If I were to receive the 2020 Ballon d’Or four years later, I certainly wouldn’t act offended – it would be a great honor.”
Robert Lewandowski has recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of receiving the prestigious Ballon d’Or award in the future. He remains humble and open to the idea, stating that it would be a tremendous honor for him.
How Does the Future Look for Lewandowski and Barcelona?
Life in Spain has been quite enjoyable for Lewandowski. He has managed to find the back of the net 53 times in 89 games for Barcelona since joining them in 2022 after his time at Bayern. The Spanish giants are expected to lose their La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid. However, the Polish goalscorer will be hoping to demonstrate that he still possesses the qualities that made him a Ballon d’Or candidate in the first place during the season’s final games.
Barcelona confirmed last week that Xavi Hernandez would remain at the club. This is good news for Barcelona fans because Xavi Hernandez’s coming in November 2021 has made the team more stable after it was falling apart. Barcelona still faces financial problems, and the club hopes to keep getting good results from their young players. This has been a gift in disguise for the club. The Spanish giants look to end this season trophyless, and the goal will be to win trophies next season. As far as Lewandowski continues to lead the line for Barcelona, the Spanish giants have a good chance of lifting trophies next season.
