Another member of the Oregon Ducks backcourt has just entered the transfer portal.
Today via his Instagram page, Ducks guard Kario Oquendo (7.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 1 APG) announced he would be entering the transfer portal.
It was a short stay in Eugene, Oregon for Oquerndo, as he was only there for one season following his transfer from the University of Georgia the year prior.
Another Oregon Ducks Guard in the Portal
Oquendo joins guard Brendan Rigsby as the two players thus far from the 2023-24 Oregon Ducks campaign to enter the transfer portal. Rigsby made his announcement on April 2nd, 2 weeks after the Ducks season ended in a double overtime loss versus the Creighton Bluejays.
Oregon was ravaged this year with injuries, so a big reason for Oquendo and Rigsby leaving on their own accord is players not on the team this past season likely have big roles for next year. The Ducks went into this season expecting big years from 5-star sophomore forward Nate Bittle and freshman phenom Mookie Cook. Unfortunately, Bittle had an illness that kept him out for most of the season, and Cook never suited up once while recovering from an ankle surgery. To go along with both of them, Keyshawn Barthelemy also suffered a season-ending injury in late January.
Returning From Injury
All three of these players have stated they will be returning and are ready to bounce back with big seasons. Oquendo could see the writing on the wall and decided it was in his best interest go to a team where he would have more opportunity to get playing time. Oquendo spent his freshman and sophomore years playing at the University of Georgia before transferring to Oregon last offseason. He has seen his minutes dwindle down since his freshman year so I hope he finds a place where he can unleash his full potential.
The Oregon Ducks had an “ok” regular season but then caught fire to win the Pac 12 tournament and a round of 64 games in the NCAA tournament. Luckily for the Oregon Ducks, they won’t have to hit the portal too hard to replace Oquendo, as they do have a lot of their injured players coming back.
