February 6 Olympic Journal: The United States Looks Good in Curling, Figure Skating, Downhill Skiing, and Women’s Ice Hockey
On February 5, in the Milan-Cortina competition, heated up and we got some answers to questions. The opening ceremonies on February 6 were outstanding, though the audience looked cold.
On February 5, the American mixed curling team was undefeated, the Team Figure Skating event kicked off, Lindsay Vonn did well in downhill training, and the United States women won their first Ice Hockey game. How many medals do you think the United States will win?
February 6 Olympic Journal Medal Count
As of February 6, there have not been any medals awarded, but the medals are coming soon. The team Figure Skating competition will wrap up tomorrow, with the Men’s competition. The United States will rely upon the ‘Quad God‘ to deliver the Gold. There have not been any medals awarded yet, but there are some big stories.
United States Undefeated in Mixed Curling
The United States is off to a 4-0 start in mixed curling. Curling is a highly addictive television event. The United States team of Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin, both from Wisconsin, is endearing themselves to those at home. They defeated Canada and Czechia on Friday, February 6. Snoop Dog was at the event. He is covering the Olympics. The United States faces a very good team on Saturday, 5-0, Great Britain. They play 0-4 South Korea on Saturday as well.
Team Competition Kicks Off in Figure Skating, US in First
The Team Figure Skating competition kicked off before the Opening Ceremony. Ice Dancing, the Pairs competition, and the Women all skated today. TheAmerican Ice Dancing team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates skated to Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman,” on their way to winning and getting ten points for their team. Allysa Liu finished the Women’s portion of the event in second place, gaining nine more points for her team.
In the Pairs portion of the team event, Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea started strong before Kam was not able to land the throw triple loop. They finished in fifth-place. Despite that disappointing result, the United States was in first place, by two points, over Japan. The United States is leading by two points and has the overwhelming favorite, Ilya Malkin, yet to skate tomorrow.
Lindsay Vonn Looks Good in Downhill Training
In probably the most anticipated training run in the history of downhill alpine skiing, Lindsay Vonn looked very good on February 6. The amazing 41-year-old Vonn successfully made it down the mountain in Cortina. She has won ten World Cup races on that course. Vonn is racing with a ruptured ACL and did not fall.
She finished in tenth place after her run and was in eleventh place after the competition. She was one minute and thirty-nine seconds behind teammate Jacqueline Wiles, who had the top time. Teammate Breezy Johnson is also a favorite.
American Women Win First Ice Hockey Game
The United States Women’s ice hockey team won its opening game of the tournament on February 5. They defeated Czechia 5-1. The U.S. team has a nice mix of veterans and newcomers. They will almost certainly win a medal, though there is some question about the color. The Americans lost to Canada in the Gold medal game four years ago. The Americans and the Canadians play each other in round-robin pool play on Tuesday.
Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony was on February 6. A highly interpretive affair, the Italians did a nice job blending their culture with the winter theme. The highlight of the Opening Ceremony was unquestionably the parade of nations. The United States got a nice hand and is sending its largest-ever contingent of athletes to the Winter Olympics.

The Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina will almost certainly be the most successful Winter Olympics ever for the United States. They definitely got off to a fast start on February 6.
