Trey Murphy III Sets Franchise Record with 12 3-Point Makes
The New Orleans Pelicans may have lost on Wednesday night to the Milwaukee Bucks, but guard Trey Murphy III had a game he will never forget. In what can possibly be the final game of Giannis Antetokounmpo on the Bucks roster, the story was the 25-year-old’s performance. Let’s take a closer look at what he was able to do in this game and what it means for the Pelicans going forward.
Trey Murphy III has a historic shooting night from beyond the arc
The New Orleans Pelicans were on the wrong side of a 141-137 road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. However, guard Trey Murphy III showcased exactly what people should expect out of him. He scored 44 points on the night, but had a career-high 12 3-points made on 19 attempts.
This performance set the franchise record for the Pelicans, surpassing CJ McCollum’s 11 3-pointers back on Dec. 30, 2022, against the Philadelphia 76ers. He was one of the few players to hit that many threes, with this being the 14th time there have been at least 12 threes made.
Klay Thompson’s 14 3-pointers are the NBA record. Below is a list of players who have hit at least 12 threes in a game:
- Klay Thompson (x3)
- Damian Lillard
- Zach LaVine
- Stephen Curry (x5)
- Keegan Murray
- Donyell Marshall
- Kobe Bryant
To put Trey Murphy III’s game into perspective, the 12 3-pointers he made on Wednesday are the same amount he made in the previous six games. Over the course of the season, he is shooting 36.0% from beyond the arc, which is the worst of his NBA career. However, his 21.6 points per game is the best of his young career.
Trey Murphy III has been paid to be a significant part of the Pelicans‘ future, as he is in the first year of his four-year, $112 million contract. If he is able to play at that level, this will certainly help the Pelicans be a bigger threat in the second-half of the NBA season.
