San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners Are Frontrunners For Brendan Donovan
The Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants have emerged as frontrunners in a potential trade for utility man Brendan Donovan, according to Katie Woo. The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to land multiple prospects in a return for Donovan.
Mariners and Giants Pushing For Donovan
The San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners appear to be the last contenders in the pursuit of Donovan. As a 28-year-old switch-hitter with team control through 2027, a .280 career average, and Gold Glove-caliber defense, Donovan is poised to command a significant return. With the Cardinals entering another rebuilding phase, Donovan is expected to headline the group of players likely to be traded for young talent this offseason.
Both the Mariners and Giants are eager to add a versatile contact hitter who can contribute defensively and have the prospect depth to make a compelling offer. The Mariners have already brought Josh Naylor back to help solidify the top of their lineup, and Donovan would be a perfect fit in the leadoff spot. With Jorge Polancoโs departure, Donovan could slot in as Seattleโs everyday second baseman.
Two prospects who could headline a deal for Seattle are Jurrangelo Cijntje and Lazaro Montes. Cijntje, a 22-year-old ambidextrous pitcher, projects to be MLB-ready by 2027 and is particularly effective when throwing from the right side. He remains a fascinating prospect to watch as he develops in the minors. Montes, the Mariners’ third-ranked prospect, brings impressive left-handed power to the table. However, his struggles at Double-A last season might make the Cardinals hesitant to pursue him.
What Would the Giants Have To Give Up?
The San Francisco Giants would likely need to part with their latest first-round pick, Shortstop Gavin Kilen. He profiles as an excellent contact hitter with impressive bat-to-ball skills, though he lacks standout power. Drafted just this past year, he could be an intriguing development project for St. Louis, but the Cardinals would probably demand additional MLB-ready talent to accompany Kilen.
Left-handed Pitcher Carson Whisenhunt could be an ideal addition. Last season, he started 21 games in Triple-A, posting a 4.43 ERA and showcasing significant upside. Although Whisenhunt has battled some injuries in the minors, his impressive pitch mix and high ceiling make him a prospect the Cardinals would find hard to pass up. He boasts an elite changeup but continues to struggle with overall command.
Ultimately, the Giants must do everything they can to acquire Donovan if they want to strengthen their lineup and compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers. While these prospects offer promise, Donovan would provide an immediate impact, and his swing is particularly suited to Oracle Park.
