Kansas City Royals Agree to 5-Year Extension with Star
The Kansas City Royals may have had a down 2025 season as they missed the playoffs, but they saw some players step up. In fact, one of those budding stars were able to play well enough to get a massive contract extension this offseason. Let’s take a deeper dive into who it is and why they received this extension.
Kansas City Royals Extend Maikel Garcia

It has been reported by multiple outlets that the Kansas City Royals have agreed to an extension with third baseman Maikel Garcia. The team has not officially confirmed the extension as of this writing. The reported contract is for five years and is worth $57.5 million, with a club option for 2031 that would get the deal in the $85 million range. If the option were to be picked up, it would buy out two years of his free agency as well.
Garcia had a breakout 2025 season as he was named to the All-Star team and finished with a .800 OPS with 16 home runs, 74 RBI, 81 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases while being caught nine times. He also won a Gold Glove in 2025 on the defensive side of things. As a Super 2 player, he received an additional year of service time, so this extension makes sense for the Kansas City Royals to do now.
With this extension, the Kansas City Royals have their infield locked up as Bobby Witt Jr and Vinnie Pasquantino are also under contract through the 2028 season. It will be intriguing to see what the Royals are able to do going forward, but they have locked up one of the budding stars in the game.
