Ryan Beard Hired As Next Head Coach At Coastal Carolina
Well, the coaching carousel keeps on spinning, and it looks like Coastal Carolina has found its new man. Forget the rumor mill, folks, the Chanticleers are officially handing the reins to Missouri State’s head coach, Ryan Beard. And let’s be honest, this hire has some serious juice.
A New Era In Teal Nation
Coastal Carolina’s Athletic Director, Chance Miller, didn’t mince words. “We landed one of the nation’s best young coaches,” he said. Miller is betting big on Beard’s “energy, work ethic, and passion” to reignite the program. And why wouldn’t he? Beard has a knack for turning teams around and making them winners. He is like the football version of a master renovator, taking good bones and building a palace.
Who Is Ryan Beard?
So, who is this 36-year-old coaching prodigy? For starters, he’s the guy who just navigated Missouri State’s jump from the FCS to the big leagues of the FBS and didn’t just survive—he thrived. He posted a respectable 7-5 record in their debut season, even booking a trip to the inaugural Xbox Bowl.
His coaching journey is a classic tale of hustle. A former defensive back at Western Kentucky, he started as a graduate assistant and worked his way up. He’s had stints at Louisville and Central Michigan, often on staffs led by the legendary Bobby Petrino. In fact, Beard is married to Petrino’s daughter, Katie, making this a true football family. When Petrino left Missouri State, Beard, then just 33, stepped up and proved he was more than ready for the spotlight.
His track record isn’t just a fluke. In his first season at Missouri State, his defense set a school record for sacks. The guy knows how to build a tough, aggressive team.
Filling Big Shoes
Beard is taking over for Tim Beck, who, despite getting the team to a bowl game in all three of his seasons, couldn’t quite replicate the magic of the Jamey Chadwell era. Chadwell’s 31-6 run from 2020-22 set a ridiculously high bar, and a 6-6 finish this season just wasn’t going to cut it. It’s a tough business, and in college football, “good” isn’t always good enough.
Now, the question on everyone’s mind is whether Beard can bring that swagger back to Teal Nation. His 7-5 record with a brand-new FBS team, including wins over Sun Belt champ Marshall and a solid FIU squad, suggests he’s got the chops. All five of his losses were against teams with winning records, so he’s not shrinking from a fight.
As for the immediate future, Coastal Carolina still has a date with Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl. Defensive Coordinator Jeremiah Johnson will step in as interim coach for that game. Meanwhile, it’s unclear if Beard will coach Missouri State in their bowl game. Talk about an awkward transition.
One thing is for sure: Coastal Carolina didn’t just hire a coach; they hired a jolt of energy and a proven winner. Will the Beard lead them back to glory? Grab your popcorn, because this is going to be fun to watch.
