The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins Have Held Conversations Regarding Sandy Alcantara
At the trade deadline, the New York Yankees were said to have interest in Marlins Starting Pitcher Sandy Alcantara. Miami opted to hold onto its former Ace, and the Yankees failed to meet the high asking price. With the Yankees still in need of another starting pitcher, they could revisit a potential trade for Alcantara.
Will the Yankees Land the Former Ace?
Jim Bowden of The Athletic said that Sandy Alcantara “has a legit shot” to get traded to the Yankees. Bowden also noted that the Yankees and Marlins have recently had talks regarding the right-hander. This makes a ton of sense, given that New York is still looking to add another starter and has already held talks with Miami late in the season, knowing which players they need to include in a deal for Alcantara.
Right now, I still don’t think the Marlins will deal Alcantara, especially if they add on to make a playoff push this offseason. They’ll most likely let next season play out and see if he can get back to his former self. If they are struggling in the middle of the year, they can revisit the trade market and see what they can get in return for him.
While Alcantara did struggle in 2025, there isn’t much concern for him. His velocity was the same as before he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023. The biggest problem for him was his command, which is easily fixable. Pair him with Matt Blake, and he could return to his former self. The question is whether the Yankees will add to their rotation via trade or the free-agent market.
What Is the Plan?
If the Yankees want to keep their top prospects, all eyes will be on Japanese Ace Tatsuya Imai. New York is the clear favorite to land Imai this winter, especially with recent reports indicating that the San Francisco Giants are no longer aggressively pursuing him. Brian Cashman has made it clear he is eager to return to the Japanese market.
Imai would give the Yankees some much-needed continuity at the top of their rotation, and they wouldn’t be giving up any prospect capital. Hal Steinbrenner will need to spend big this offseason if he wants to get them back into contention, especially if they add a left fielder on top of their pitching staff. The market for Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker is going to heat up with the Winter Meetings starting on December 7.
