Arizona Diamondbacks Sign 2019 All-Star to a Deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks have been searching for the ability to shake off a disappointing 2025 season and take the next step forward as a team. The team has a solid top of their roster, but could make some interesting moves this offseason.
While the team is looking towards free agency to help reshape the roster, they have already inked a deal to keep a former All-Star player at Chase Field. Let’s take a deeper dive into the news and discuss who is staying put with the Diamondbacks for the 2026 season.
Arizona Diamondbacks Re-Sign James McCann

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a contract with catcher James McCann. It is being reported that the deal is a one-year, $2.75 million contract with $500,000 in incentives as well.
McCann spent last season with the Diamondbacks, but only appeared in 42 games. During that time, he finished with a .260/.324/.431 slash line with five home runs, 17 RBI, and 18 runs scored in 137 plate appearances as the backup catcher to Gabriel Moreno.
McCann has shown the ability to step up as he was a 2019 American League All-Star, but he has never been able to reach those heights again. However, he is a valuable veteran catcher who can help lead the pitching staff while putting up a good at-bat at the bottom of the lineup.
A backup catcher may not be the difference between where the team finished and a World Series, but getting the correct players in the building is critical for long-term success. They have reportedly been willing to move one of their top players, but it will be interesting to see how the Arizona Diamondbacks look going forward and how they attempt to address some holes in their roster to compete in the National League.
