Neck Guards Mandatory In 2026 Ice Hockey Olympics
The International Ice Hockey Federation confirmed that neck guards will be mandatory for all hockey players in the 2026 Winter Olympics. The upcoming Olympic Games will feature NHL players in competition for the first time since 2014.
Neck Guards Mandatory For Winter Olympics
The decision comes in the wake of Adam Johnson’s death in October 2023 after he was struck on the neck with a skate blade by Matt Petgrave during a game in Sheffield, England. The International Ice Hockey League also mandated that players wear neck guards for hockey, but it was never announced when it would be mandatory.
Although players have opted in on wearing the guards since the incident, players will be required to wear them starting in the NHL 2026-2027 season. However, USA college hockey players are required to wear neck guards at all ages, and in boys’ and girls’ hockey. This rule has been implemented since August 1, 2024.
Olympic rosters have been set for most countries competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics. Now, players await the finalization of rosters before practice starts. With the success of the 4 Nations Tournament, which was held during the NHL season break in February, the Olympics should be nothing but magical and special.
The favorites to make the finals are Canada and Team USA. The 4 Nations grabbed a huge audience as the 2026 Olympics are expected to have huge crowds and TV spectators watching all the ice hockey games.
