Minnesota Twins Find Next Manager
It looks like the Minnesota Twins are bringing back a familiar face to steer the ship. Derek Shelton, fresh off a less-than-glamorous stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates, is reportedly taking the helm as the new manager. If you’re feeling a bit of déjà vu, you’re not alone. Shelton was the Twins’ bench coach back in 2018 and 2019, right alongside the guy he’s now replacing, Rocco Baldelli.
The Twins decided to part ways with Baldelli on September 29 after a season that can only be described as a face-plant. Expected to be contenders in the AL Central, they instead stumbled their way to a 70-92 record, finishing fourth in the division. It was a season so forgettable that even the fans seemed to forget, with attendance at Target Field hitting its lowest point in a non-pandemic season since the Metrodome days.
A New Chapter For the Twins
So, what are the Twins getting with Shelton? He’s a guy with plenty of experience, but his time in Pittsburgh wasn’t exactly a highlight reel. Over five-plus seasons, he managed a 306-440 record. The Pirates, a team famous for pinching pennies harder than Ebenezer Scrooge, never really got off the ground under his leadership. They showed a glimmer of hope in 2023, but it was more of a flicker than a flame.
Now, Shelton is trading in his Pirates gear for a return to the Twin Cities, where he’s tasked with leading a team in the middle of a full-blown rebuild. Remember that trade deadline fire sale where the Twins practically gave away a third of their roster? Yeah, that happened. Shelton is walking into a situation that requires a hard hat and a whole lot of patience.
What’s Next For Minnesota?
The good news? The Twins have one of the best farm systems in baseball, ranked second-best by MLB Pipeline. So, while the present might look a little bleak, the future is packed with potential. Shelton’s job will be to guide this young talent and mold them into a competitive force. It’s a tall order, but maybe a change of scenery is just what he and the Twins need.
