Philadelphia Flyers Defeat New York Islanders 4-3
The Flyers are about as good as the Islanders; they are one point behind them in the Metropolitan Division standings. As the Flyers hosted this game, we might have expected them to win. They did, 4-3 in overtime. Twice in this game, the Islanders saw leads disappear. They led 2-0 and 3-2 and could not hold either lead. They must be able to hold leads if they are going to make the playoffs. Do you think the Islanders will make the playoffs this season?

Marshall Warren Makes NHL Debut Vs Flyers
Marshall Warren made his NHL debut today. He is a native of Laurel Hollow, on Long Island. Of the debut, he said, “It was pretty emotional, it’s been a crazy journey, I was driving here thinking about how I was a little kid at Ice Works, skating in that Islanders program, and I never would have thought I’d be in this position. It’s surreal, I don’t have any words for it.” Warren had 5 points in four games for Bridgeport. He had two assists in this game.
News and Notes
- Ilya Sorokin got the start in this game against the Flyers. Will he get a spark from the new goaltender coach? The new coach coached him when he was in the Russian KHL, where Sorokin has astounding statistics.
- This game against the Flyers is the first time that we will not write about Matthew Schaefer specifically. He is outstanding.
- Coming into this game, Bo Horvat was red-hot for the Islanders. He leads the team with nine points (5 goals and 4 assists). Emil Heineman is also red hot. Heineman is coming off a two-goal outing on Thursday. He has five goals so far. This is the first time the Islanders have had two players with five goals in the first seven games of the season since Mark Parrish and Alexei Yashin did it in 2001-02.
- Scott Mayfield got in the first fight of the year for the Islanders in the first period against Garnet Hathaway.
- In the waning seconds of the game, the Islanders gave the puck away in front of the net.
Conclusion
This game against the Flyers was a chance for the Islanders to pick up a fifth win in a row. The Flyers are about as good as the Islanders, maybe a little weaker on paper. By making it to the overtime period in this game, the Islanders were guaranteed a point. However, that point felt hollow as the Islanders blew two leads. The overtime loss felt justified.
