Connor Zilisch Met Max Verstappen Thanks to SVG’s iRacing Connection
It’s one of those stories that makes you remember why you love racing. It’s not just about the sound of engines or the drop of the checkered flag. It’s about the people and the connections that happen off the track. For rising NASCAR star Connor Zilisch, one of those moments came not in a garage or a driver’s meeting, but over a dinner table with one of the biggest names in all of motorsports: Max Verstappen.
It’s a scene that’s almost hard to picture: a young, hungry American driver on the fast track to the NASCAR Cup Series, breaking bread with a four-time Formula 1 World Champion. How in the world does something like that even happen? The answer, like so many things in modern racing, started in the virtual world and was made possible by a guy who has taken the American racing scene by storm, Shane van Gisbergen.
Connor Zilisch Reveals Unlikely with Max Verstappen
During an appearance on the Kenny Conversation podcast, Zilisch pulled back the curtain on this incredible meeting. It wasn’t some stuffy, planned corporate event. It was as simple as a friend inviting another friend to dinner.”I went to dinner with him about a year ago in Texas,” Zilisch explained. “I went down there to film a video with SVG and the other two Red Bull F1 drivers.”
That connection to Shane van Gisbergen, the three-time Supercars champion who has become a NASCAR sensation, was the key. Van Gisbergen and Verstappen had forged a genuine friendship during the COVID-19 pandemic, battling it out as teammates on iRacing when the real world was on hold.
Their bond wasn’t built on PR opportunities. It was built on late nights, virtual paint schemes, and a shared, raw passion for competition.”Shane is actually pretty good friends with Max,” Zilisch said. “SVG and Max were teammates on iRacing. So, they became close friends… he invited me to dinner with him and Max, and I got to meet Max and talk to him and get to know him better.”
From Sim Racing to a Texas Steakhouse
This is more than just an incredible story about a young driver meeting his hero. It speaks volumes about the changing landscape of motorsport. The lines between disciplines are blurring, largely due to sim racing. A platform that was once seen as a hobby is now a legitimate breeding ground for talent and, just as importantly, for relationships.
For a guy like Connor Zilisch, who has had a meteoric rise through the junior ranks, an experience like that is invaluable. It’s a chance to see how a champion at the absolute pinnacle of the sport carries himself. It’s a moment of realization that these larger-than-life figures are, at the end of the day, just racers who love what they do.
Verstappen’s own willingness to step outside the F1 bubble shows his deep love for all forms of racing. He recently made his GT3 debut at the legendary Nürburgring and, in typical Verstappen fashion, dominated. It’s this versatility and respect for other disciplines that have fans and fellow drivers like Zilisch buzzing.
Could We See Max Verstappen in a Stock Car?
Naturally, the conversation with Zilisch led to the ultimate “what if” question: Could we ever see the Dutch master try his hand at the raw, untamed beast that is a NASCAR stock car? Zilisch is hopeful. “It’s been fun to watch his F1 career, and hopefully one day he’ll get over here and get the chance to race either some stock cars or sports cars or something.”
It’s a tantalizing thought. Verstappen is renowned for his incredible car control and aggressive style, traits that are practically prerequisites for success in NASCAR. Seeing him wrestle a 3,400-pound machine around Daytona or Martinsville would be a spectacle for the ages.
Final Thoughts
For now, Connor Zilisch is focused on his own path. He’s set to take the monumental step up to full-time Cup Series racing with Trackhouse Racing in 2026, taking over the seat from Daniel Suárez. But that dinner in Texas will surely stick with him as a reminder that in the world of racing, you never know who you’ll end up sharing a table with, or what dreams might be sparked in the process.
