Philadelphia Flyers Defeat Isles 3-2 in 11 Round Shootout
The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 in an eleven-round shootout 3 2. The preseason game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Islanders took place at the UBS Arena, the home of the New York Islanders. Despite the Islanders’ loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, they did get a ‘loser point’ for making it to overtime.
The game was also the first Islanders game for first overall pick Matthew Schaffer and crushing defenseman Kashawn Acheson. The latter hurt his knee in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers, but he is day-to-day and will not miss much time. How many ‘loser points’ do you think the Islanders will get this season?
Philadelphia Flyers Defeat Islanders 3-2
This was the first preseason game of the season for both teams, and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 at UBS Arena last night. There was not much to the game, as there was not much scoring. The star of the game was the Islander’s Kyle Palmeiri, who scored a goal and had an assist. Mat Barzal, who indicated he may still be dealing with a knee injury from last season, skated well to the relief of Islanders’ fans. He even had one assist.
The scoring summary is pretty straightforward for this game. Rodrigo Abols scored a goal for the Philadelphia Flyers just 2:42 into the first period. The Islanders scored two goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Palmeri scored his goal 4:01 into the second period. Then, Marshall Warren scored for the Islanders 16:48 into the period to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead. Warren will most likely play in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Bridgeport Islanders.
The Philadelphia Flyers tied the game near the end, with 1:18 left in the game, as Matvei Michkov scored to tie the game at 2. There was a scoreless overtime, and then the Philadelphia Flyers won in the eleventh round of the shootout to gain a 3-2 victory. The Islanders got a so-called ‘loser point’ for making it to overtime, but it is moderately worrying that the Islanders surrendered a one-goal lead late in the game; this was a problem last year.
The Kids Are Alright
The big news from this game, however, was not the score. It was the Islanders’ debut of two of their three 2025 first-round draft picks, Matthew Schaefer and Kashawn Aitcheson. Schaefer first. Number one overall pick in the 2025 National Hockey League draft, played well.
The most significant thing was that he managed to play the game without sustaining an injury. He committed two penalties in the second period and attempted a shot in the marathon shootout period. He also had a SportsCenter-worthy highlight, making a phenomenal back-check. He fit right in, and it was a good thing he got his feet wet.
The other big story of the game was Kashawn Acheson, a crushing defenseman who was a first-round draft pick of the New York Islanders. He hurt his knee in this game, in a vicious knee-to-knee collision. The incident looked bad, but Acheson is listed as day-to-day, so the injury is not that serious.
In terms of play, Acheson was also quite good, although his night was cut short. He did have one second-period penalty against, a holding call when he was beaten, aside from that, he was pretty good.He needs a bit more seasoning, so we will have to watch the injury to see if he misses any vital preseason games. It seems like he is destined for Brightport.
Conclusion
There was a successful game for the Islanders despite the loss. Results in the preseason do not matter much; what matters more is if players play well. The Islanders got that from two of their three first-round draft picks. The Islanders next play Monday night against the Devils. It will be interesting to see if some of the Islanders’ other prospects play.
