New York Giants Offense Makes Wrong Type Of History In Week 1 Loss
The New York Giants have not been known for their offense in recent years. That was reinforced by their performance this afternoon on the road against the Washington Commanders. New York lost 21-6 earlier today. It was the third consecutive time the Giants have failed to score a touchdown in their season opener. The last NFL team to be held without a TD in at least three straight season openers was the Detroit Lions from 1940-1942.
Veteran Quarterback Russell Wilson did not instill much confidence in “Big Blue” faithful with his performance in Week 1. He finished with 168 passing yards and failed to complete 50% of his passes. Will the offense of the New York Giants be able to get on track?
How Will the New York Giants Respond?
New York’s poor offensive showing led to more questions than answers. Head Coach Brian Daboll gave Wilson a vote of confidence following the loss, about being the team’s starter next week. “Yes, I mean we’re just right here after the game. I got confidence in Ru – we got to do better around overall. Coaches, players, around everybody.”Â
Star Wide Receiver Malik Nabers also expressed frustration with Daboll this afternoon. Here is what Daboll had to say about the issues between him and Nabers on the sidelines. “We are two competitive people. We want to give him the ball. That’s all it is. Two competitive people understanding offensively where we’re at and where we want to be.” Nabers was only able to pull in 5 of his 12 targets on the day. While Daboll is saying all the right things, he began this season on the hot seat. Today’s performance will not make his seat any cooler.
Final Thoughts
The New York Giants will face the Dallas Cowboys on the road next Sunday. Dallas looked good on defense in their first game without superstar player Micah Parsons. That is not a good sign for a Giants squad that looks lost on the offensive side of the ball.
