The New York Yankees Get The Job Done In Chicago
The New York Yankees continue to handle business against below .500 teams. Their recent hot streak has pulled them to within just 3 games of the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East crown. The Yankees starting pitching has really stepped up recently, and the lineup has been firing on all cylinders. The real test will be over the next two weeks, as they will face all of the top teams in the American League.
Game 1: Bats Came Alive
The Yankees started the series off with a bang, as Cody Bellinger hit an absolute bomb to right field, giving them a quick 2-0 lead. Jazz Chisholm Jr added to the lead in the 2nd inning with a solo homer, and Ben Rice’s RBI single made it 4-0. The White Six stormed back as Miguel Vargas hit a grand slam off of Will Warren to tie the game at four. New York was able to get White Sox Starting Pitcher Davis Martin out of the game quickly, allowing them to absolutely hammer Chicago’s bullpen.
The Yankees scored 5 earned runs in the final 5 innings of the game, totaling 12 hits. Despite Warren’s struggles, the bullpen was phenomenal. A combined hitless performance from Fernando Cruz, Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, and Mark Leiter Jr slammed the door, leading the Yankees to a 10-4 win.
Game 2: Swaggy T Strikes Again!
The Yankees were going for their sixth-straight win behind Carlos Rodon, making the start against his former team. The Yankees started off the game with three straight walks, and Ben Rice drove in the first run on a double play. New York blew the game open in the fourth inning with a grand slam from Trent Grisham. They piled on three more runs in the 6th inning, with RBI singles from Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, and Ben Rice.
Rodon put together another solid start, going 6 innings, allowing one run, and striking out five batters. Volpe added on with a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Camilo Doval came in and slammed the door.
Game 3: He’s The Schlitt
The game was scoreless through three innings, and Aaron Judge left his mark with a solo homer in the fourth. The White Sox evened up the game at 1, with Mike Tauchman’s RBI single. In the 7th inning, Austin Wells gave the Yankees the lead with a solo homer, but Devin Williams blew it in the blink of an eye. It remained scoreless through 9, and the game was sent to extra innings.
The top of the 10th was an absolute disaster, as Ryan McMahon grounded right to the second baseman, and Wells was thrown out by a mile because he was running on contact. With his back against the wall, David Bednar put together a stellar performance. Kyle Teel grounded out, which allowed the runner to advance to third, and the game was seemingly over for New York. Bednar then struck out the next batter and was able to get Colson Montgomery to line out to third, forcing another inning.
The bats came alive in the 11th, starting with Bellinger’s blooper to left field, scoring Trent Grisham. Next, Chisholm and Volpe came through with RBI doubles, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead. Doval came in and locked it down, and the Yankees won their seventh straight game. Cam Schlittler put together another strong start, going 6 innings, allowing just one run, and striking out 8 batters for the third time this season.
Game 4: Yankees Look To Sweep
The final game of the series ended up being the closest. Judge led the game off with a solo blast, his 43rd homer on the season. Will Robertson’s double in the second inning tied things up at one. Bellinger gave New York the lead once again with an RBI double in the 3rd inning. Montgomery evened the score at 2 apiece with a solo home run in the 6th inning. Luis Gil had another solid outing, going 5.1 innings, allowing 2 runs, and striking out 7. Martin Perez was also very good for Chicago today, shutting down the Yankees lineup for 5 innings, allowing just 2 runs.
Lenyn Sosa hit a go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the 8th off of Tim Hill, and New York went down quickly in the 9th inning. The deciding factor of the game was Mike Tauchman robbing Giancarlo Stanton of a two-run home run in the third inning.Â
Important Stretch Upcoming
Over the next 12 games, the Yankees have a chance to take back first place in the division, along with the best overall record in the American League. They will start a three-game series with the Houston Astros on Tuesday, and then six games at home against the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers. To end it, they’ll head to Boston to take on the Red Sox in a three-game series.
If they can go 8-4 or even 7-5 through these 12 games, they could win the AL East. The good news for fans is that they will end the season with 13 games against the Twins, White Sox, and Orioles.
