Chicago Blackhawks Sign Frank Nazar To Gigantic 7-Year Contract
The NHL season is a few months away, and it is an exciting time for fans and players. Around late August is when certain players get gigantic contracts, including younger players. This is done to ensure that the franchise does not have to pay more for a promising young talent. That is what the Chicago Blackhawks recently did as they signed Frank Nazar to a long-term extension.
Who Is Frank Nazar?
Nazar is a 21-year-old hockey player who plays as a right winger/center. He has been a part of the Chicago Blackhawks organization since the team drafted him. The Blackhawks drafted him during the 2022 NHL draft in the 1st round, 13th overall. Last season was his first in the majors as well.
The Details Of the Contract
When diving into the details of Nazar’s contract, it is eye-opening. It’s a seven-year extension worth a total of $46.13 million. It’s a $6.59 million cap hit, and that cap hit will begin in 2026 and go through 2033. As for his cap hit for the 2025-26 season, it will be $950,000. To ensure he’s locked up, they wanted to get this done now.
Is This An Overpayment?
The Chicago Blackhawks wanted to get this deal done. However, many fans have debated whether or not this is an overpayment. Especially as Nazar is 21 years old and only played one year in the majors. However, it was a really good season for Nazar, who was a bright spot for the Blackhawks on the ice. He played 56 games last season and managed to contribute 26 points, where he scored 12 goals and had 14 assists.
He showed a ton of potential, and with how highly touted he was, the Blackhawks felt he was too valuable to let go and wanted to pay him properly. Is it a risk? Yes, but the risk could be worth the reward.
Final Thoughts
It was not an if, but when the Blackhawks were going to lock up Nazar long-term for a contract. Imagine how much Connor Bedard’s contract is going to be, as he is the face of the organization. He is going to get a gigantic payday, and if the Blackhawks spent this much to keep Nazar, Bedard’s will be a tremendous one. The Blackhawks have an eye on the future and want to lock up players they see as being a part of their franchise.
