San Diego Padres Trade for Mason Miller Before 2025 MLB Trade Deadline
The San Diego have been quiet throughout the MLB Trade Deadline, but have finally struck by landing arguably one of the best relief pitchers in the sport. This move will make the team a lot more interesting as general manager AJ Preller continues to make additions to the roster. Let’s take a deeper dive into this massive trade and what it means going forward for the San Diego Padres.
San Diego Padres Trade for Mason Miller

The San Diego Padres continue to play in the deep end of the trade market as they have agreed to a trade with the Athletics. The move sees the Padres send shortstop prospect Leodalis De Vries and three pitchers to the Athletics in exchange for starting pitcher J.P. Sears and closer Mason Miller. De Vries is the third-overall prospect in baseball at this time and is only 18 years old with the ability to be a top player, but is currently in Single-A so it will be a few years until he sees time in the majors.
The centerpiece of this deal is obviously Miller, who is not a free agent until after the 2029 season. With five years of control, Miller can be the star in the ninth for the Padres for a long time. Miller is 1-2 with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 38.1 innings. However, he has 20 saves and 59 strikeouts while hitters have just a .163 batting average against. As a result of this deal, Buster Olney is reporting that Robert Suarez and Dylan Cease are likely to be traded as well.
This move makes the San Diego Padres, who hold the final NL Wild Card spot and just three games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, a significant threat. It will be interesting to see what other moves are made as the bullpen pieces continue to fly off the shelf before the 6 pm ET deadline.
