Miami Heat Select Kasparas Jakucionis With No. 20 Overall Pick In 2025 NBA Draft
The Miami Heat selected Illinois Fighting Illini star Kasparas Jakucionis with the 20th pick in the 2025 NBA draft. The third-team All-Big Ten member had an up-and-down but overall solid season for the Illini last year. The Lithuanian-born guard averaged 15 points while adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists in 33 games last season.
Jakucionis’ Skillset & Fit With the Miami Heat
The Heat get a young player in Jakucionis who already has plenty of experience at the professional level in basketball. Jakucionis joined the professional ranks in Europe at the age of 15, playing with FC Barcelona from 2022 to 2024 before committing to Illinois last season.
While that experience as a professional player will certainly give Jakucionis an advantage compared to his draft class peers, he is still a bit of a raw prospect. Jakucionis is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades type player, able to rebound, pass, and score at all three levels. While Jakucionis’ three-point percentage of 31% will certainly be the thing he will have to work on most, Jakucionis’ all-around game will fit well within Miami Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra’s system.
Final Thoughts
After trading star Jimmy Butler to Golden State during last season’s trade deadline, the Heat desperately needed a player with Butler’s skillset heading into next season. While Jakucionis is not the same level defender that Butler is, his ability to pass and score at all three levels will certainly open the floor up for other players like Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo to flourish. Expect Miami to remain competitive and tough heading into the 2025-26 NBA season.
