Kyrie Irving Contract Extension Update
Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving reportedly intends to sign a three-year, $119 million contract extension, just days after opting out of his $43 million player option. Irving, 33, averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, along with a 47.3% field goal percentage, during the 2024-25 NBA regular season. Read on for an update about Irving’s contract extension.
Kyrie Irving Intends to Sign Contract Extension
Kyrie Irving’s three-year, $119 million contract extension — reportedly negotiated by his agent and stepmother Shetellia Riley Irving — includes a player option for the 2027-28 NBA season. Irving’s contract extension will keep the 33-year-old in Dallas, Texas, for the long-term, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania, 31, wrote in an ESPN article, “Irving’s importance to the Mavs only increased with the shocking blockbuster trade of five-time All-NBA point guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, only months removed from Dallas’ run to the NBA Finals.”
“Irving has thrived in Dallas since arriving via a 2023 deadline deal with the Nets, which ended a tumultuous 3½-year tenure in Brooklyn.”
Kyrie Irving Issues a Post-Contract Extension Message
After agreeing to a new contract extension, Kyrie Irving took to social media to give his reaction. Kyrie Irving quoted Shams Charania’s post on X, formerly Twitter, and wrote “Hela x @dallasmavs” and “Tribe, Maktub” to his 4.7 million followers.
Irving opted out of his player option and took a pay cut. Kyrie Irving’s decision helped the Dallas Mavericks avoid the NBA’s second apron salary cap restrictions, which make operating and adding players to the roster significantly more difficult than in previous years. The Mavericks will operate under the NBA’s first apron restrictions.
Final Thoughts
The Dallas Mavericks have been getting things done. The Mavericks finalized contract extensions with Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford, who reportedly agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract extension earlier this week. Gafford, 26, was nearing the end of a three-year, $40 million contract extension he signed in 2021 as a member of the Washington Wizards before being traded to the Mavericks.
The Mavericks are reportedly eyeing Chris Paul. Paul, 40, is past his prime and likely nearing the end of his NBA career. However, Paul’s ability to facilitate the Mavericks’ offense as Irving recovers from his torn ACL, along with his capability as a solid bench player once Irving returns, makes him a good option for the Mavericks.
