Game 1 Battle Between Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees
Game 1 in Boston was a chance for the Yankees to build upon a three-game winning streak and to further distance themselves from the rival Red Sox. However, the Yankees had an unfavorable starting pitching matchup in game 1 and lost 2-1.
Ryan Yarbrough was going for the Yankees in game 1 against the Red Sox ace Garret Crochet. This was the same pitching matchup when the Yankees and the Red Sox played six days ago. Yarbrough had his worst outing of the season, but the Yankees did score five runs off Crochet. Did you think Yarbrough would be successful in this game?
Lineups
The Boston Red Sox had Rob Refsnyder as the left fielder, batting leadoff. Jarren Duran pinch-hit for him in the eighth inning. Rafael Devers was the designated hitter, batting second. Romy Gonzalez was the first baseman, batting third. Marcelo Mayer pinch-hit for him in the eighth inning. Mayer stayed in the game.Â
Carlos Narváez was the catcher, batting fourth. Roman Anthony was the right fielder and batted fifth. Trevor Story was the shortstop and batted sixth. Abraham Toro was the third baseman and batted seventh. Ceddanne Rafaela was the centerfielder and batted eighth. Kristian Campbell was the second baseman and batted ninth. David Hamilton pinch-hit for him in the eighth inning.
For the Yankees, Paul Goldschmidt batted first and was the first baseman. Ben Rice was the designated hitter and batted second. Aaron Judge batted third and was the right fielder. Cody Bellinger was the center fielder and batted fourth. Anthony Volpe was the shortstop and batted fifth. Jasson Dominguez was the left fielder and batted sixth. DJ LeMehieu was the second baseman and batted seventh. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted eighth. Oswald Peraza was the third baseman, batting ninth.Â
Game Reaction
For game 1, the Red Sox were wearing green uniforms. That was wrong. The Red Sox should wear their usual uniform when they play the Yankees. Even if the game falls on a Friday they need to wear their City Connect jerseys. The jerseys were green, with yellow numbering, because of the green monster and the famous foul poles at Fenway, but there was no red on the uniforms.
Judge was 0-of-3 in his first three with three strikeouts against Crochet. It is possible his day off yesterday hurt him. Though it could be that he faced a tough pitcher. Then again, maybe not. He is amazing. Yarbrough pitched well in game 1, but the Yankees could not score against Garret Crochet. Yarbrough pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering only one run.
News and Notes
The Yankees were a season-high 17 games over .500 coming into tonight. They swept the Kansas City Royals. Last night was the first game Judge did not start all season. Giancarlo Stanton was not in the Yankees’ starting lineup for Game 1 in Boston. However, reports are that he could play for the Yankees this weekend.
Pablo Reyes, who gets little playing time, scored the Yankees’ lone run last night, as he got a rare start. He scored on an infield hit by Goldschmidt. It is a good thing that Royals pitcher Lucas Erceg threw the ball into the ground because Reyes fell as he rounded third and headed for home.
Before last night’s game in Kansas City, the Yankees called up injured Relief Pitcher Scott Effross. To make room on the major league roster, Brian Headrick was sent to the minors. The Red Sox have played an amazing 27 one-run games. They are just 10-17 in those games.
Scoring Summary
In the second inning, the Red Sox scored as Rafaela singled and Story scored. The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead. In the ninth inning, Judge hit a solo home run for the Yankees. That tied the game at 1. A walk-off single from Narvaez clinched the win.
Conclusion
Game 1 of this series was another entertaining and hard-fought tilt. Game 1 was played in historic Fenway Park, which helped the allure. The Yankees and the Red Sox will play the second game of this series, nationally televised on Fox, on Saturday, June 14. The second game of the series is at 7:15 pm Eastern time. The Yankees have a slightly more favorable pitching matchup in the second game of this series.
