Walker Buehler Against Will Warren In Game 1 Was Great
Walker Buehler pitched tonight against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Buehler matched up with the Yankees’ young, and fairly beleaguered, starting pitcher, Will Warren. The Yankees jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and won this game, 9-6. The Red Sox are dysfunctional, and the Yankees hoped they would take advantage of that dysfunction from their main rival. Buehler was not effective. Did you think the Yankees would sweep this three-game series?
Lineups: Buehler battles Warren
The Boston Red Sox had Jarren Duran as the left fielder, batting leadoff. He moved to center field in the sixth inning. Rafael Devers was the designated hitter, batting second. Wilyer Abreu was the right fielder, batting third. Kristian Campbell pinch-hit for him in the seventh inning. He stayed in to play second base. Carlos Narváez was the catcher, batting fourth.
Abraham Toro was the first baseman and batted fifth. He moved to third base in the sixth inning. Marcelo Mayer was the third baseman and batted sixth. Romy Gonzalez pinch-hit for him in the sixth inning and stayed in to play first base. Trevor Story was the shortstop and batted seventh.
David Hamilton batted eighth and was the second baseman. Rob Refsnyder pinch-hit for him in the sixth inning and stayed in to play left field. An inning later, he moved to right field. Ceddanne Rafaela was the center fielder and batted ninth. He moved to second base in the sixth inning, then back to center field in the seventh inning. Maybe all these lineup changes were the result of Buehler pitching poorly.Â
For the Yankees, Trent Grisham batted first and was the center fielder. Aaron Judge was the right fielder and batted second. Cody Bellinger batted third and was the left fielder. Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman and batted fourth. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the third baseman and batted fifth. Jasson Dominguez was the designated hitter and batted sixth. Anthony Volpe was the shortstop and batted seventh.
After being hit by a pitch by Buehler, Oswald Peraza came in to play shortstop in the third inning. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted eighth. DJ LeMahieu was the second baseman, batting ninth.
Game Reaction
The Yankees jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning against their rival. The shell-shocked Buehler gave up all those runs with two outs in the inning. After taking an 8-0 lead, 7 runs off the wild and ineffective Buehler, the Red Sox relievers came in and did a pretty good job. At one point, it was 8-4 Yankees. At another point, it was 9-6 Yankees.
Judge reached base in both the first and second innings, It was the 48th time this season he has reached base twice in a game. On this date, 12 years ago, the Yankees selected Judge with the 32nd pick of the draft. That was a pretty good pick.
News and Notes
It was the D-Day anniversary at Yankee Stadium. Not only did the patrons receive a Yogi Berra bobblehead (he participated in the D-Day landings), but the Yankees sang “God Bless America” during the seventh inning stretch. They always honor a veteran, and tonight honored a World War II veteran.
The game was delayed about 30 minutes because of rain. So, the weather had an effect. Col. Ruppert, who owned the Babe Ruth-era Yankees, said that a good game was when the Yankees jumped out to an 8-0 lead and slowly pulled away. This game was sort of like that. With their two home runs in the first inning, the Yankees now have 100 home runs. They are the second team in Major League Baseball to reach that milestone.
Scoring Summary
In the first inning, Chisholm Jr. hit a three-run two-out home run. He is 6-of-12 since coming off the IL Grisham and Judge scored. The Yankees jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Then Volpe hit a two-run home run, and Dominguez scored. Just like that, the Yankees were leading 5-0, and Buehler was shell-shocked, on the anniversary of D-Day. With these two home runs, the Yankees have hit 20 first-inning home runs.
In the second inning, Chisholm Jr. singled, and Judge, who was on base again, scored. The Yankees took a 6-0 lead. Then Volpe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Goldschmidt scored. The Yankees took a 7-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Mayer hit a solo home run for the Red Sox. The Yankees’ lead was cut to 7-1. In the fifth inning, Judge singled and Wells scored. Then the Yankees took an 8-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Red Sox scored three runs. First, Abreu hit a sacrifice fly and Duran scored. Then, Romy Gonzalez, who had come in as a pinch hitter for Marcelo Mayer, both Devers and Narvaez scored. It was 8-4 Yankees. In the sixth inning, Goldschmidt hit a solo home run. The Yankees lead 9-4. In the seventh inning, Devers hit a two-run home run. He and Duran scored. It was 9-6 Yankees.
Conclusion
The Yankees needed to get off on the right foot against the rival Boston Red Sox. Buehler pitched against the Yankees in the 2024 World Series. Familiarity was an advantage for the Yankees. The Red Sox and Yankees play again tomorrow night at 7:35, a nationally televised game on Fox.
