Famous Boxer Ryan Garcia Had Surgery On Right Hand After Last Fight
Famous boxer Ryan Garcia underwent successful surgery on his right hand on Tuesday. He suffered the injury before his last fight against Rolando “Rolly” Romero. The procedure was performed by Dr. Steven Shin, who has previously worked with other notable boxers, including Canelo Alvarez and Vasiliy Lomachenko. Garcia posted on X that included, “I went and got the surgery for my hand and what I needed to get done. I never used that as an excuse for my fight.” Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated first reported the news.
What’s Next?
Garcia will be able to begin training again in six weeks. The injury occurred during his preparation for the Romello fight that took place at Times Square on May 2nd. He was not very active that night, to say the least, as he threw less than 20 punches in 9 of the 12 rounds, according to CompuBox. Romero knocked Garcia down in the 2nd round and outboxed him overall to score the upset and secure the regular WBA welterweight title. Together, they threw the third-fewest punches in a 12-round fight.
The plan was to have a Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney rematch later this year, but the loss has put that plan on hold for now. Haney was featured on the same card and earned a unanimous decision victory over Jose Ramirez in a fight that lacked fireworks. Garcia and Haney fought in April of 2024, with Garcia winning by majority decision. However, failed drug tests for Ostarine ended up turning the fight into a no-contest.
Final Thoughts
The boxing world will be waiting to see what Ryan Garcia does next. His last bout was a disappointment, but he has proven to have the potential to be a superstar. I’m sure Devin Haney will still want to have a rematch at some point. Canelo Alvarez, who had the same doctor perform surgery on his left hand years ago, is set to have a massive fight with Terence Crawford in September.
