Mystics Win 2025 Opener in DC Thanks to Sykes’s Dominant Performance
A young Washington Mystics Team that has dealt with injuries in the preseason, found the way to win a close 94-90 battle against the visiting Atlanta Dream on Friday Night. Brittney Skyes led the team with 22 points, five assists, three rebounds, a block, and a steal. Rookie Sonia Citron came into the W hot with 19 points on 6-7 shooting from the field, 2-2 from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Dream was led by Allisha Gray’s 25 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. The Dream and Mystics each had five players in double figures in this thrilling game. Here is more of a look at this game in depth.
Citron and Iriafen showed out in the WNBA Debuts
Like I highlighted in the intro of this recap, Citron lit up the scoreboard in her debut with those 19 points on the very efficient shooting. The Mystics other rookie that was on the floor Kiki Iriafen also had a very strong performance on her right with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists. This year’s Mystics rookie class was very good overall, with the three first-round picks, Citron, and Iriafen were able to display that while we will have to wait for Georgia Amoore until the 2026 season, thanks to a torn ACL in training camp. But Night One was huge for the Mystics’ rebuild.
The Atlanta Dream Disappointed on Night One
The Dream, with the addition of Brittney Griner, were hoping to be one of the stronger teams in the WNBA this season, and to come out short against a young DC team in the Opener is a bad result. Yes, it was on the road, but the Dream’s 14 turnovers to the Mystics’ seven was the outcome that changed the game in a 4-point game. The Dream should be a threat to make the playoffs, but after this game, there might be some questions that surround that expectations.
Final Thoughts
The Mystics were able to give the home crowd a very fun night in the home opener with a huge win thanks to Sykes and the two rookies. The Mystics will be looking to get some experience this season. Meanwhile, the Dream looks to get some momentum back in their next game after a disappointing start to the season. Total Apex Sports will have more WNBA coverage throughout the season, so stay tuned and locked into this great coverage.
