Clarke Schmidt Scratched From 3rd Start As New York Yankees Turn To Bullpen
Clarke Schmidt was scratched from his scheduled start. He is not expected to end up on the IL. Nevertheless, because of Schmidt’s injury through Yankees were forced to use the bullpen the entire game. Ryan Yarborough did a nice job starting in Schmidt’s place. He allowed a run in the back and forth 3-2 Yankee loss ]. Do you think Schmidt will ever be right?

Scoring Summary: Schmidt Misses Start; Yanks Lose
In the first inning the incomprehensible Judge hit a solo home run and the Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead. That lead was short lived as in the second inning. Walls hit a sacrifice fly and Caballero scored. Tampa tied the game at 1. In the fifth inning, Wells hit his sixth home run of the year and the Yankees took a 2-1 lead.
In the eighth inning, Mark Leiter Jr. came in and made a mess of things. Mead singled and Simpson scored. Later in that inning, Caballero was out on a fielder’s choice and Lowe scored. The Rays took a 3-2 lead and that is how the game ended.
Game NotesÂ
Yankees No. 2 prospect Spencer Jones yesterday blasted his league-leading ninth home run for AA Somerset. Vivas made his second start for the New York Yankees after his impressive two walk performance last night. At game time it was 79 degrees Fahrenheit and Sunny. The weather was perfect for baseball. Judge was 2-for-4 and is now hitting a cool .432.
Fernando Cruz pitched two scoreless innings for the Yankees in this game and decreased his earned run average to 1.32. He looks like the next great bullpen reclamation project for the Yankees. Volpe had an injury scare for the Yankees in that terrible eighth inning. He fell awkwardly on his shoulder. He shook it off and stayed in the game.
Conclusion
This 3-2 loss for the Yankees was costly in more than one way. The fact that Schmidt missed his scheduled start was bad for the Yankees. It is reasonable to ask if Schmidt will ever be healthy. Finally, the injury to Volpe, though he stayed in the game was scary. Let’s hope the Yankees shortstop wakes up healthy and can play tomorrow. Fans hate to see players get injured.
