Rafael Nadal shares verdict on Jannik Sinner’s suspension
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is set to make his return to the ATP tour after a three-month suspension. The Italian has been under the microscope due to his doping scandal that came to the spotlight in August last year, shortly after his Cincinnati Open triumph. The criticism was loud and alarming to the Italian, but he let his racket do the talking.
Despite the criticism, Sinner eventually agreed to a three-month suspension from WADA. The Italian’s suspension will end on May 4 as he is set to return at the Rome Masters in front of his adoring fans. Despite the end of his suspension, the debate about his innocence has not stopped. 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is the latest to share his viewpoint.
Rafael Nadal Backs Jannik Sinner
Nadal claimed that Sinner was wrongly accused of being a ‘cheater’ as he believes that the World’s No. 1 player didn’t violate any rules with respect to the doping scandal. “In the end, if I’m not mistaken, he came out of the ruling as innocent. In this case, it’s not been positive for our sport, tennis. But these things happen sometimes, accidents happen, and that’s how I see this because I believe in Jannik. I’m convinced from what I know of Jannik that he never tried to cheat or get an advantage over the rest. I am sure that Jannik is an innocent and moral person.” Rafael Nadal said in The Telegraph.
Nadal was one of the first tennis celebrities to support Sinner after the news broke ahead of the US Open. However, many other former and current tennis players were critical of the judgment. Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios showed the biggest disapproval. Kyrgios had constantly expressed his thoughts on the Sinner scandal through his X account.
This debate was split down the middle because of inconsistency. Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep had similar scandals, but they were suspended for 12 to 18 months. Halep recently retired from the game after being unable to cope with the physical demands. She was suspended after the 2022 US Open.
Final Thoughts
Nadal has always backed Sinner in his doping scandal, and this statement proves that. However, it remains to be seen how the World No. 1 is physically and mentally as he returns to the Rome Masters. The storyline for Roland Garros will pick up steam with the Italian’s return.
