New York Yankees Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. Suspended 1 Game
The New York Yankees will have to play their next game without one of their most important players. On Saturday morning, Major League Baseball announced Yankees Second Baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. would be suspended for one game after violating the league’s social media policy. After getting ejected following an argument with an umpire regarding a strike three call on Thursday, Chisholm posted something on X/Twitter while the game was still going on. It was a direct violation of the MLB rule that prohibits the use of electronics during a game.
Chisholm, who was able to play in the Yankees’ 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, will miss only one game before being eligible to return for the series finale on Sunday. Sitting at 13-7, the Yankees are currently leading the AL East and will look to continue on that path in the hopes of returning to the World Series.
Chisholm’s Path To the Yankees
Signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a 17-year-old international free agent back in 2015, he spent four years in the D-Backs minor league system before being traded to the Miami Marlins in July of 2019 for Zac Gallen. After spending the 2019 season in the minors and being added to the 40-man roster ahead of the 2020 season, he made his MLB debut in September of the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Becoming the team’s full-time second baseman in 2021, Chisholm spent the next three and a half seasons starring in Miami, making the All-Star team in 2022.
Then in July of 2024, Chisholm was traded to the Yankees as part of the Marlins’ fire sale and became an instant fixture in the starting lineup. He hit four home runs in his first three games with the team. Throughout the Yankees‘ playoff run, Chisholm continued to be an integral part of the team, going 5-for-21 with a .238 average and a home run in the World Series. Overall, Chisholm hit .256 with 24 home runs and 73 RBI.
Chisholm’s Season So far
The start of 2025 has been a rough one offensively for Chisholm. Through 75 at-bats, he is hitting .160 with 6 home runs and 11 RBI. But while he has struggled to be a threat at the plate, he continues to show off his speed with four steals already on the year and has continued to shine on defense. Primarily playing third base when he first got to New York, the team has since moved Chisholm back to second base full-time after last year’s starting second baseman Gleyber Torres signed with the Tigers in the offseason.
Having only played 20 games, there are many opportunities for Chisholm to get back on track and return to form. Will the suspension be a good opportunity for him to rest and come back stronger?
Final Thoughts
A one-game suspension is not a big deal given how long the season is, but it does show how serious the MLB is about its policies. The fact that Chisholm took to social media to bash an umpire while the game was still going on, warrants him to receive some sort of punishment. But given his early season struggles, getting an unplanned day off may not be so bad and allow him to get his head right for Sunday’s game.
