The Masters: Sudden Death For a Grand Slam
The Masters is the Super Bowl of golf. When you win a Green Jacket you join names like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. It is an accolade that many chase and never get, but in this year’s Masters Rory McIlroy had a chance to also complete his career Grand Slam. The Last Pairing Of the Masters
The last pairing of round 4 was Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy came in at 12 under par. That quickly changed as he would double bogey the first hole. With McIlroy at 10 under par, you would think DeChambeau would try to take advantage, but the great Augusta National would show him otherwise as he fell quickly down the leaderboard with 4 bogeys and a double bogey.
Justin Rose, the leader from the first 2 rounds, would be the one to challenge McIlroy by snagging 10 birdies on the day. Rose shot a 66. That would tie McIlroy at 11 under par. Then, on the 17th hole, McIlroy’s second shot will be one of the most memorable shots of his career. He placed the ball on the green to set up an automatic birdie putt to take him back to 12 under. The last hole would spell doom for McIlroy. He would bogey the last hole sending him and Rose to a playoff to determine the winner of the 2025 Masters.
Sudden Death and Final Thoughts
This Masters came down to a sudden-death playoff hole for the first time since 2017. McIlroy and Rose would head back to the tee on 18 to see if McIlroy would capture a 6th career Grand Slam or if Rose would capture his second major.
It was a packed crowd to see two of the golf world’s best duel it out. After a beautiful drive, McIlroy put the ball on the green for a 5-foot putt. Rose had to putt first with his 15-foot putt but he missed it slightly settling for par. It was up to McIlroy to hit his 5-foot birdie putt to win his Green Jacket plus a career Grand Slam.
He hit the putt with ease dropping to his knees with tears of happiness. It was a moment golf fans everywhere will remember. With this Green Jacket, he is only the sixth winner of the career Grand Slam. The world will remember this Masters for years to come.
