Dallas Mavericks Defeat Utah Jazz 106-94

The Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks were in Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on the Utah Jazz at the Delta Center on Saturday night. The Mavericks entered the road game with an 11-8 record, while the Jazz had a 4-14 record, despite home-court advantage. The Mavericks sought a three-game winning streak on the road, as the Jazz looked to snap a two-game losing skid at home. The Jazz’s last win occurred on November 23, a 121-106 victory over the New York Knicks.

The Mavericks defeated the Jazz 106-94 for their third straight win. Dallas improved to 12-8, while Utah fell to 4-15. Kyrie Irving led the Mavericks with 30 points, six rebounds, and nine assists. Quentin Grimes followed up with 24 points and four rebounds. PJ Washington Jr. added 16 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist. Daniel Gafford had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists. Spencer Dinwiddie scored seven points, two rebounds, and 10 assists.

Dallas Mavericks-Utah Jazz Recap

The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz’s game was action-packed from start to finish. The Mavericks’ injury report ruled out Klay Thompson due to left plantar fasciitis, Dante Exum due to right wrist surgery, and Luka Doncic due to right wrist sprain. The Jazz’s injury report ruled out Kyle Filipowski for left lower leg inflammation and Jordan Clarkson for left plantar fasciitis.

The Mavericks’ starting lineup consisted of Kyrie Irving, Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall, PJ Washington Jr., and Dereck Lively II. Grimes, a former New York Knick, credited New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau for giving him hard defensive assignments. After the Mavericks vs. Knicks game, Grimes explained how Thibodeau’s assignments helped him get a good understanding of how to guard NBA All-Stars.

The first quarter saw Kyrie Irving and the Mavericks making it rain with three-pointers. Quentin Grimes was on fire, which left some fans asking, “Klay Thompson who?” The Mavericks led the Jazz 40-22 at the end of the first. The second quarter saw Irving and the Mavericks continuing to make it rain with threes. The Mavericks held a 56-49 lead over the Jazz at halftime.

The third quarter witnessed a similar pattern, as Quentin Grimes picked up where he left off. Grimes recorded 17 points in the first half for his most points in the opening half. He previously recorded 16 points at the Indiana Pacers on April 5, 2023. Pretty much the only difference was Naji Marshall suffered an upper respiratory issue and was questionable to return. The Mavericks held an 86-76 lead over the Jazz after three quarters. The fourth quarter was rather low-key, and the Mavericks beat the Jazz 106-94 in regulation.

Mavericks-Jazz Highlights

The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz’s game featured plenty of highlights, such as the Mavericks’ success without Doncic. The Mavericks have found new ways to win amid Doncic’s injury absence, with Head Coach Jason Kidd describing PJ Washington’s play as “great,” while challenging him to maintain his consistency. Kidd also stated that if the Mavericks lose, there’s no panic, just learn.

For the Mavericks, Kyrie Irving’s Boston Celtics “super team” comment went viral in a recent appearance on Twitch with content creator Kai Cenat. Irving told Cenat the Mavericks lost in the 2024 NBA Finals before the former asked the latter if he doesn’t think he’s a little more motivated after playing against a super team. The Mavericks’ improvement after a four-game losing skid shows Irving appears to settle down and perhaps grow roots in Dallas, Texas.

For the Jazz, the team’s rookie Forward Cody Williams scored in double figures in his G League debut with the Salt Lake City Stars in a 115-108 loss to the Santa Cruz Warriors at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday night. Williams posted 18 points, three rebounds, and one assist, and shot 6-of-18 from the field goal line and 1-of-7 from the three-point line. Salt Lake City fell to 4-4, while Santa Cruz improved to 3-4.

Final Thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the New York Knicks 129-114 at the American Airlines Center on November 27. The Mavericks had a 2-1 road trip before returning home. The Mavericks survived the effects of Luka Doncic’s sprained right wrist as the 2024-25 NBA season reaches the one-quarter mark. The Mavericks’ ability to handle a short stretch without their star player without losing ground in the standings is impressive.

After the Mavericks vs. Knicks game, Quentin Grimes shined with 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Grimes annoyed the Knicks on both ends of the court, as the Mavericks got a big boost from their new energizer. Grimes’ final stat line wasn’t significant, but the Mavericks enjoyed a team-best +16 when Grimes was on the court. Grimes’ gritty defense set the tone in the Mavericks’ first half.

The Mavericks will wrap up the two-game road trip with a road game against the Portland Trail Blazers on December 1 at 6:00 p.m. Pacific. The Mavericks took on the Jazz at the Delta Center on November 30, while the Trail Blazers hosted the Sacramento Kings at the Moda Center on November 29. Dallas could struggle due to the potential jet lag, as Portland’s given home-court advantage can work in favor.
