Jon Jones Pitches Big Fight Against Alex Pereira after UFC 309

Jon Jones

Jon Jones is now looking forward to competing against the emerging fighter known as Poaton, Alex Pereira. In recent weeks, Jones has been discussing his plans to challenge the Brazilian fighter. This will probably happen after Jones fights against Miocic and wins but if he loses then the chances of him fighting Pereira decreases.

This raised questions about the Interimweight Champion Tom Aspinall, so he cleared his opinion about Aspinall to fight him. But he left a door open seemingly for Alex Pereira, the current light heavyweight king.

Jon Jones against Tom Aspinall

Jones is receiving a lot of criticism from a lot of fans and commentators for not fighting Aspinall, but it is clear that he is not going to fight him. However, he doesn’t want to hold back the division or keep Aspinall from winning the title once he’s ready to retire. At this point, Jones is looking forward to adding more and more to his legacy. For that purpose, if he comes to a point where he is required to lose his belt and go to the other division to fight Pereira, then he would make that happen without giving it a second thought because that would be his last fight.

Jon Jones said this in an interview. “It’d be cool to fight over the heavyweight championship but I would also willingly give up the heavyweight championship. I walked away from the light heavyweight championship. I’d love to walk away from this one as well on top, on my own terms, good head on your shoulders, making lots of money. I love the position that I’m in right now.”

According to Jones, fighting Alex for a “BMF” title would be a great fight to go for before retiring.  Jones said this while discussing future fights and this brings a whole new flavor to his style of fighting. As we know, Jones is often referred to as the greatest of all time.

On the other hand, Pereira is gradually turning into one of the fierce fighters because of his knockouts, but the question arises: What are the things that give priority to Pereira over Aspinall in the eyes of Jones to fight him? On the other side, the BMF title no longer has any weight division, as the current BMF title is with Max Holloway who hovers around 145 pounds divisions.

Jones said this about his interest in the BMF title. “Fighting Pereira for the ‘BMF’ belt, that would be cool. We both have two belts in two weight classes and the night we fought we’d both be fighting for our third belt, which would be the ‘BMF.’ How cool would that be?”

Another Title at BMF

If we look at the history of BMF, it has only been on the shoulders of a few Champions. Jorge Masvidal held the first ‘BMF’ title after defeating Nick Diaz in the welterweight division. Before that, the title was won by Justin Gaethje after he KO’d Dustin Poirier in the lightweight division. And at last, the fierce Holloway beat Gaethje at UFC 300 to strip him of the belt. However, Dana White respects Jones a lot, and he will introduce a new BMF title for Jon Jones and Alex Pereira.

Jones is positive about the fight against Stipe Miocic and Alex Pereira but when it comes to Aspinall, he turns his back on him. Jones said this about Aspinall. “The interim championship shouldn’t have been there in the first place. The only reason why there was an interim championship fight was because I got hurt and they needed to keep the importance of that Madison Square Garden event. But Sergei Pavlovich and Aspinall shouldn’t have been fighting for an interim title in the first place.”

Final Thoughts

Jon Jones was out of the Octagon because of a torn Pectorial Muscle and he wasn’t able to fight Miocic at that time. But if he is injured again in UFC 309 then there will be a high chance that he will retire after that without fighting Alex Peirera and Tom Aspinall.

That injury opened the gates for Alex Pereira and Aspinall because Alex Pereira won the Interim Title after that, and now Aspinall is holding it, which makes them both potential contenders for Jon Jones. What are your thoughts about the UFC 309 and the future of Jon Jones?
