Miami Dolphins Make 0 Trades at Deadline

The Miami Dolphins had a crushing loss on Sunday and their season hangs in the balance.
The Miami Dolphins’ 2024 season has seen many challenges, from dealing with numerous injuries, including one that sidelined starting QB Tua Tagovailoa for four games, to overall inconsistency with execution. As the clock struck 4 p.m. EST on the NFL Trade Deadline, the Dolphins front office had an opportunity to shake up the roster.

Dolphins Make No Moves at Trade Deadline

Coming off a disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 9, Miami did nothing at the trade deadline. The front office, spearheaded by General Manager Chris Grier, believed in the potential of this roster to get better rather than looking for quick fixes. Such a decision shows confidence in the team’s long-term foundation, even though the team has gotten off to a 2-6 start.

The fact that they held onto key players and did not adopt the “seller mentality speaks to their belief in Tua Tagovailoa to guide the team through tough situations. The front office knows the spark that Tagovailoa brings to this offense. At the same time, despite recent setbacks, the defense has some players they could build off of. While one might have hoped for some reinforcements to help immediatelythat decision might have deferred them from their commitment to grow from within and build on existing chemistry.

But that lack of deadline non-moves puts pressure on the current roster to right the season on its own terms. The next stretch of games will define whether standing pat at the deadline was the right moveGoing forward, the attention for Dolphins will be on perfecting complementary football as it attempts to prove this team has the resolve it takes to finish strong.

Miami Sits at 2-6 Struggling to Find Identity

Rather than a cohesive season for Miami, it thus far been one of disparate parts: an anemic offense with a consistent defenseOn offense, they are in a tie for the third-fewest passing yards in the league, preventing them from keeping up in shootoutsThe rushing game is middle-of-the-pack at 15th, with moments of productivity but not quite the dominance to make up for the passing game.

As a defense, the Dolphins have been more than serviceable, ranking second in the league in passing yards allowed and 10th in fewest rushing yards conceded. That strong defensive effort has helped keep games close, even when the offense hasn’t found its rhythm. Despite that kind of success on the part of the defense, their efforts are constantly undermined by an inability of the offense to sustain drives and score points when given those opportunities.

At 2-6, the Dolphins are void of an apparent identity as team, with an offense incapable of taking the sting off their top-shelf defense. Their inability to consistently marry these aspects has resulted in a team unable to close out games or sustain momentum from start to finish. As the season progresses, a more complementary style of play will be super important in their development. They hope to salvage whats left of their playoff hopes.
