Sporting Lisbon vs. Manchester City: UEFA Champions League Preview

Manchester City plays AFC Bournemouth tomorrow.

Manchester City is set to travel to Portugal for their Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola’s team is in danger of losing three games in a row for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Sporting Lisbon is also facing a tough situation, not because of their performance on the pitch but due to an off-field decision. They are getting ready to part ways with their manager, Ruben Amorim, who is set to join Manchester United.

Sporting vs. Manchester City: Match Details

Match: Sporting Lisbon vs Manchester City

Date & Time: Tuesday 5 November, 2024 – 8:00 pm GMT / 3:00 pm ET

Stadium: Estadio Jose Alvalade

Preview

Guardiola’s struggling team lost the top spot of the Premier League after a surprising 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth. Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson scored for Bournemouth, while Josko Gvardiol managed a late goal for City. This loss comes just days after their EFL Cup hopes ended at Tottenham Hotspur stadium. However, the 2022-23 Champions League winners have started strong in Europe this season, scoring four goals against Slovan Bratislava and five against Sparta Prague, following a scoreless draw with Inter Milan in their first match.

After Erik ten Hag’s long-awaited exit, Amorim is set to take the reins at Old Trafford. He will officially become Manchester United’s new head coach after the international break in November. A win on Tuesday would be a great way to win over the fans of the Red Devils. Even though reports from Portugal say some of Sporting’s big-name players are unhappy with the 39-year-old’s choice, the Primeira Liga giants are staying focused and are set to host City at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Sporting vs. Manchester City: Team News

Guardiola was worried he might only have 13 players ready for the Bournemouth match, but that didn’t happen. After recovering from injuries, Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Kyle Walker, and Kevin De Bruyne all made it back onto the matchday squad. The City manager has announced that defenders Ruben Dias and John Stones will be sidelined for a while due to some issues. They will join Rodri (ACL), Oscar Bobb (leg), and Jack Grealish (unknown) in the treatment room.

Sporting will likely be without two players for their upcoming match. Defender Eduardo Quaresma is dealing with a muscle issue. Nuno Santos, on the other hand, has been out for a while and is expected to miss the rest of the year due to a knee injury. Viktor Gyokeres contributed to four of his team’s five goals in a big win against Estrela. Reports suggest that Manchester City sees him as a perfect option if Erling Haaland decides to leave the club. The 26-year-old has scored an impressive 20 goals in just 17 games this season and has netted in all four of his home matches for Sporting in European matches.

Possible Starting Lineups

Sporting Lisbon: Israel (GK), Inacio, Diomande, Debast, Quenda, Braganca, Hjulmand, Araujo, Trincao, Gyokeres, Goncalves

Manchester City: Ederson (GK), Lewis, Akanji, Ake, Gvardiol, Silva, Kovacic, Gundogan, Doku, Haaland, Foden

Prediction

All eyes will be on the clash between two exciting Scandinavian players, Gyokeres and Haaland. The match in Lisbon promises to be exciting as Amorim looks to finish strong. A struggling Man City can still be a tough opponent. And while Sporting has shown great strength in the league this season, Guardiola’s squad has the ability to match their intensity. It is tough to predict, but this match will produce goals.

Our prediction: Sporting Lisbon 2-2 Manchester City
