Gilbert Arenas Makes a Klay Thompson Realization

Gilbert Arenas discussed Klay Thompson's contract.

Gilbert Arenas recently made a Klay Thompson realization to the public. Arenas, 42, is a former point guard who played in the NBA from 2001-2013. The 42-year-old is a three-time NBA All-Star who made the 2007 All-NBA Second Team, 2005 and 2006 All-NBA Third Team and was named 2003 NBA Most Improved Player

Arenas’ NBA career was controversial, to put it mildly. Arenas was suspended for most of the 2009-2010 NBA season for reported handgun violations and subsequent actions that reportedly made light of the situation. However, Arenas’ show, “Gil’s Arena,” is rather interesting. Here’s what you need to know about the 42-year-old’s recent realization about Thompson.

Gilbert Arenas’ Realization

Gilbert Arenas is a man of many words, but Arenas’ recent realization of Klay Thompson was an eye-opener. Arenas previously slammed Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks’ lack of a supporting cast for Doncic before he predicted Doncic’s higher chances of a successful regular season.

Arenas recently said on the “Gil’s Arena” show, “I feel bad for Klay…If you take his name off of his stats, everybody is lining up… $30-$40 million per year … Buddy Hield is playing very well right now. If he had those stats coming in, y’all would have gave him $120 million. When you really want to make someone irrelevant, you look at what you want to look at.”

Arenas made his point known about Thompson, who signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks this offseason. The Mavericks entered the 2024-25 NBA season with high expectations, and although Thompson has been delivering, Thompson’s recent play is just a small sample size for the time being, so we’ll keep an eye out for any changes.

Arenas Ponders

Gilbert Arenas appeared to ponder Klay Thompson’s contract on his “Gil’s Arena” show. NBACentral recently posted on X, “Gilbert Arenas believes that Klay Thompson would have earned up to $40M per season if his name weren’t Klay Thompson.”

NBACentral’s recent post of Arenas’ thoughts surrounding Thompson was eye-opening. Arenas previously shared doubts about Thompson’s adjustment in Dallas, Texas. Thompson’s current three-year, $50 million contract is a head-scratcher for some, if not, most people. But it’s important to note that Thompson currently plays for the Mavericks, a winning team that can embark on an NBA Finals run with and deliver an NBA title to Dallas.

Klay Thompson’s Success

Klay Thompson is one of the newest Dallas Mavericks. As of November 1, 2024, Thompson is the Mavericks’ third-leading scorer with 16.5 points per game through four games. Both Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic average 20+ points per game. Thompson’s primary role is to space the floor. That said, the points scored shouldn’t be the only factor for consideration. The Mavericks’ regular season and postseason expectations are quite high. However, Thompson could help the Mavericks meet — and perhaps exceed — the expectations while getting a change of scenery in Dallas, Texas.
