Ryan Farrag’s Rematch with Marcel Braithwaite Falls Through

David Lopez

This scheduled matchup between Ryan Farrag and Marcel Braithwaite will no longer happen. The former European bantamweight champion posted the news on his official social media account, stating disappointment in having to look for a new opponent for November 15.

Frustration Over Braithwaite’s Decision to Withdraw

Farrag openly expressed his frustration, sharing that he and his team made significant sacrifices preparing for the anticipated match. Braithwaite’s withdrawal from the fight has dealt a significant blow to Farrag’s career, as the boxer will not only have to find an opponent but also be unable to challenge the IBO Inter-National title or defend the Commonwealth title on the show. Farrag criticized the move to pull out, saying it was disrespectful since he couldn’t understand why Braithwaite would stop challenging opponents in the first place.

Ryan Farrag vs. Marcel Braithwaite: A Story of Rivalry

The fight that started the bitter rivalry between Farrag and Braithwaite was in June 2023, when the two fighters fought for the Commonwealth title fight. Braithwaite was declared the winner in that razor-thin decision, leading to calls for a rematch. That focus was even more apparent when Braithwaite relinquished his British super flyweight title earlier this year. It enabled him to train for what people anticipated would be another intense fight with Farrag.

Since they first met, Farrag and Braithwaite have remained in the news. After beating Farrag last year, Braithwaite won the British title by knocking out Ijaz Ahmed. He then began traveling internationally. He fought in South Africa, where IBO super flyweight champion Ricardo Malajika defeated him. Farrag, on the other hand, only stepped in the ring once this year, in June, beating Quaise Khademi to win the Commonwealth title. With both fighters suddenly picking up the pace, the path appeared clear for the two to fight.

However, as Farrag looks forward to the November 15 fight, his intent is that of a fighter who fully expects to secure the victory. It was impressive to see the Liverpool native go out and demonstrate that he is prepared to look beyond it. What has not been determined is the end of the competition between him and Braithwaite.

Farrag’s devotion to the job and fans cannot be denied. The question remains whether these two Liverpool rivals will ever step into the ring again or leave it in the hands of their promoters to make the match happen. This remains to be seen, but Ryan Farrag’s next fight looks set to be a cracker.
