The latest around the NHL this week is the buzz around injuries. Teams around the league are suffering injuries that will sideline players for a few weeks. Teams such as the Colorado Avalanche, Washinton Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, and Carolina Hurricanes. Some players are day-to-day to week to week and these teams will be shuffling around their lines to compensate for the loss of their players for the time being.
NHL Injuries Around the League
The Colorado Avalanche are expecting their Forward Ross Colton to be out with a broken foot for 6-8 weeks. The forward got injured in the loss against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. He took a shot off his foot and did not return to the game after the second period. Colton Ross leads the Avalanche in goals with eight goals and nine points in 10 games. He has been playing on the Nathan McKinnon and Miko Rantanen line. It is a big loss for the Avalanche, the Aves called up defenseman Oliver Klyington and forward T.J. Tynan from Colorado’s minor league team with Colton sidelined.
The Washington Capitals suffered a big blow with Jakob Chychrun sidelined with no real timetable for returning to the lineup after suffering injuries to his upper body. Chychrun played 1:49 before leaving early in the first period of a 5-3 win against the New York Rangers on Tuesday. Head Coach Spencer Carbert said “Day to day,” Wednesday. “I’ll have to get the report this afternoon. Don’t have a determination yet.” Chychrun was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in the offseason. He is the top defenseman alongside John Carlson.
More Injuries From Around the League
The St. Louis Blues are now day-to-day without Forward Kasperi Kapanen. Kapanen left the game with an upper-body injury in the 8-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday with 3:15 remaining in the second period. Head Coach Drew Bannister said “He’ll stay with us. Just evaluation, but an upper-body injury, and he’s day to day.”
The Carolina Hurricanes lost Goaltender Frederick Anderson to a lower-body injury. Anderson is considered day-to-day, which coach Rod Brind’Amour does not believe is serious. Andersen did not dress for a 4-3 overtime win against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday after he made 18 saves in a 4-1 win at the Seattle Kraken on Saturday. Andersen is 3-1-0 with a 1.48 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage this season. The Hurricanes called up goalie Spencer Martin from Chicago of the American Hockey League on Monday to serve as the backup.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without their Forward Bryan Rust for a few weeks with a lower-body injuries. The forward left early in the third period of a 4-3 loss on Saturday, favoring his right leg after battling with Canucks forward Nils Hoglander along the boards. Rust has been playing alongside Evgeni Malkin. Rust has three goals and one assist in eight games. Head Coach Mike Sullivan will be changing up lines now that Rust is week-to-week.
Final Thoughts
These teams are suffering key injuries with these players missing from the lineup. The head coaches from each team will need to make adjustments to their lines to make it work for the time being until their players are ready to come back and play. On the flip side, with these players out it gives the minor league or AHL players a chance to play in the NHL and get experience and exposure into the league. Injuries to one player can lead to another one’s opportunity.
