Chicago White Sox Name Will Venable New Manager

The Chicago White Sox named Will Venable their new skipper.

The Chicago White Sox announced this morning their decision earlier today to name Will Venable the team’s new manager. Venable takes over the job from Interim Manager Grady Sizemore who was named the interim manager following the firing of Pedro Grifol on August 8. Venable interviewed with the Chicago White Sox during the 2023 MLB Offseason for the open manager position. The job eventually went to Grifol.

Venable was a rising star in the coaching profession following his retirement from Major League Baseball. He spent three seasons with the Chicago Cubs as both a special advisor and a first base/third base coach. He then spent three seasons with the Boston Red Sox as the bench coach and was a part of the 2023 Texas Rangers World Series winning team in 2023 as the associate manager under Bruce Bochy. How will this news work out for both the Chicago White Sox and Venable?

Will Venable Career Summary

Venable, 42, had a nine-year MLB career including stints with the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Texas Rangers. He is a career .249 hitter with 81 home runs and 307 RBI. Having been around the game ever since his retirement, he hopes to be able to relate to the players Chicago White Sox and help the ballclub get back on track.

Chicago White Sox Are In a Rough Spot

It has been a staggering fall from grace for the Chicago White Sox. After making the MLB Playoffs in 2020 and 2021, just three years later the team set an MLB record with 121 losses. Chicago’s 121 losses were the most in the Modern ERA(since 1900). The nightmare season included a 21-game losing streak which tied the American League record for the longest single-season losing streak.

In addition to Venable trying to rebuild the worst team in league history, Chicago White Sox Owner Jerry Reinsdorf may be selling the team. The Chicago White Sox have an offseason to try to right the ship, and hiring Venable as their new manager is their first marquee move of the cycle.

Final Thoughts

Will Venable takes over a Chicago White Sox team that is in freefall. The to-do list during his first offseason as an MLB manager is vast. Both he and General Manager Chris Getz must determine what players from the 2024 season they want to have be part of the Venable regime. Another issue that arises is in free agency and whether or not any marquee players will want to sign with the team following the miserable season they are coming off.

One positive as Venable begins his tenure is the Chicago White Sox is lack of expectations. The club has nowhere to go but up, and the fans of the franchise will not be expecting much from Venable in 2025. All the fans would like is for their team to not be the worst in over a century.
