Quentin Grimes Reportedly Rejected Contract Extension

Quentin Grimes reportedly rejected a contract extension from the Dallas Mavericks.

Dallas Mavericks Shooting Guard Quentin Grimes reportedly rejected a contract extension after reported talks with the Mavericks about a new extension. On July 6, 2024, the Detroit Pistons traded Grimes, 24, to Dallas for Small Forward Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round draft picks. The 24-year-old played a short-lived stint with the Detroit Pistons in 2024 and a three-year tenure for the New York Knicks from 2021 to 2024. Grimes likely won’t stay with the Mavericks, but it’s important to take a closer look at Grimes’ rejection of the Mavericks offer. Read on for further details surrounding the rejection, the talks, and vice versa.

Quentin Grimes Rejected Contract Extension

After the Dallas Mavericks’ offer of a rookie-scale contract extension, Quentin Grimes reportedly rejected the Mavericks’ namesake extension. NBA Insider Marc Stein, who first broke the news on X, formerly Twitter, recently reported Grimes’ rejection.

Stein posted on X, “After talks with Dallas on a new deal, Grimes elected not to accept the Mavericks’ three-year offer — believed to be in a similar range as Dallas’s three-year, $27 million offseason deal with Naji Marshall — in hopes that a strong debut season alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving can lead to a richer deal in restricted free agency.”

The Mavericks’ offseason was busy. The team’s attempts to offer a rookie-scale contract extension to Grimes made it even busier. But, in the end, Grimes’ declining of the team’s offer could hurt the team, as his versatile game was one of his many positives.

Grimes’ Role In Dallas

Quentin Grimes’ role in Dallas can be described in many ways. But, in short, Grimes’ role can be best described as a solid backup guard for the Dallas Mavericks, as Grimes can start in spot situations if necessary. The only question is, “How much of an impact will he make in the Mavericks rotation this season?”

Despite potential talent, Grimes’ last season was far from great. Grimes started in only 18 of 45 games for the New York Knicks in 2023-24 before being traded to Detroit and then Dallas. The Houston and Kansas alum appeared in only six games for the Detroit Pistons and averaged a lowly seven points, two rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game for the Knicks and Pistons combined.

Grimes can showcase his potential in Dallas and is reportedly slated to become the Mavericks’ backup shooting guard behind Kyrie Irving. But it’s important to note that the Houston native still has an opportunity to play winning basketball for a contender, which should be reconsidered.

More Quentin Grimes News

Quentin Grimes can make or break his future with the Dallas Mavericks. Grimes’ reported rejection of the Mavericks’ contract extension offer might’ve been the wrong choice. Grimes showed some potential in New York and Detroit before being traded to Dallas this summer.

The Mavericks’ new-look system with Head Coach Jason Kidd and star players, such as Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson, appears attractive, to say the least. Also, the Mavericks could’ve helped Quentin Grimes improve his game and then his three-point shooting.
