New York Mets fans are extremely familiar with the talent that Freddie Freeman possesses. Freeman terrorized the New York Mets for years when he was a member of the Atlanta Braves. His skill set was on full display last night as he hit a walk-off grand slam to help the Los Angeles Dodgers win Game 1 of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees. Freeman’s historic swing sent Dodger Stadium into a frenzy.
This historic World Series has Mets fans in a predicament. The Los Angeles Dodgers just knocked New York out of the MLB Playoffs, but there is no love lost between the fans of New York’s two baseball teams. With that being said, there is only one team for New York Mets fans to root for in the 2024 “Fall Classic.” The Los Angeles Dodgers.
Why New York Mets Fans Should Root For Los Angeles
Even though the Mets and Dodgers have a storied playoff history, I don’t believe there is a deep-seated hatred between the two franchises. The same thing cannot be said between the fans of the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. With fewer than 10 miles separating Citi Field from Yankee Stadium, the sensibilities between the two franchises cannot be any different. New York Mets fans consider themselves the fans of the “Regular Joe.” This sensibility was true during a storybook 2024 season that saw the Mets come from nowhere to become one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball over the final months of the regular season.
Fans of the Yankees come off as entitled, as if winning a World Series is a birthright. For decades that was not far from the truth, but a 15-year World Series drought has Yankees fans chomping at the bit to add a 28th championship to their trophy case. Even though both of these teams call “The Big Apple” home, true fans of the New York Mets cannot be rooting for their cross-town rival to emerge victorious.
Final Thoughts
The thought of the New York Yankees having a Ticker-tape Parade down the Canyon of Heroes should make fans of the New York Mets sick. If the Yankees were to win the 2024 World Series, they would not let Mets fans live it down. As a person with countless Yankees fans in the family and the holidays right around the corner, I have no interest in hearing my relatives gloat about another Yankees championship.
Even though the New York Mets went 4-0 against the Yankees during the regular season, it would ring hollow if the Yankees were to go on and win the World Series. Mets fans must be chanting one thing as they watch the World Series: Let’s Go Dodgers!
