New York Islanders Surprisingly Win Against the New Jersey Devils

The New York Islanders lost in OT to the New Jersey Devils.

The New York Islanders got a surprise overtime victory in New Jersey, 4-3. The Devils are one of the best teams in the National Hockey League so this was a good victory. New York scored four goals in total including the overtime winner from Bo Horvat. This is probably about the maximum output the New York Islanders can expect with the injury to Anthony DuClair.

New York has a great opportunity to pick up two more points in a game with the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, also a first-place team. This was an excellent game for the New York Islanders. The best part of this game was their captain Anders Lee scored again. He now has three goals on the year.

Surprise Points

Many expected New York to lose this game against one of the best teams in the National Hockey League. Nevertheless, New York did, and they got two vital points by winning 4-3 in overtime. The Islanders are tied for fourth place in the Metropolitan Division and are in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Division. The New York Islanders need to score points. Barzal is being checked more closely, but he needs to overcome this with his speed.

Stars Of the Game

New York had several of their star players contribute significantly. Ilya Sorokin had a very good game in goal. It seems like he is over his back issues. This is good news for the New York Islanders. Brock Nelson scored his third goal for New York. This is good, after all, it is “Brocktober.” This is a player who needs to fill the void with the injury to Anthony DuClair. Bo Horvat scored the overtime winner for the New York Islanders. He wears an alternate captain A, which was newly awarded this season. Horvat is viewed as a leader for New York.

Captain Anders Lee Scored His Third Goal

Captain Anders Lee scored his third goal of the young season. He had 40 in 2017 but scored only 20 last season. This season is looking more like a 40 goal year than a 20 goal season. This is a good sign for the New York Islanders because Lee is the type of player who must make a greater contribution now that DuClair is injured. It seems like he will.

Scoring Summary

This was a back-and-forth game where the New York Islanders blew three one-goal leads, including allowing a game-tying goal with inside three minutes to go. It looked like the Islanders would get another loser point, but Horvat would not allow it. Brock Nelson scored to give the Islanders the first period lead. Nico Hischier scored for New Jersey to knot the game at 1. Anders Lee scored on the power play to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead. That is how the first period ended.
Lazar scored for the Devils to tie the game at two in the second period. Kyle Palmieri then scored for the Islanders to give them a 3-2 lead after two periods. Jasper Bratt scored for the Devils with 1:29 remaining in the game. That goal knotted the game at three and sent the game to overtime. Overtime would not last long as Bo Horvat scored 1:09 in to give New York the win.

Conclusion

The New York Islanders did not dominate in this game but did just enough to win in New Jersey. This was a good win for New York. They now have an opportunity to beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers and pick up four points nobody expected.

As far as an upcoming schedule goes the Islanders play a very good Panthers team on October 26 at home. This is the second half of a back-to-back game, which they struggled with last season. Then the Islanders play another back-to-back next week. They host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, October 29 and they play a game on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, October 30. Then they travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres on November 1. New York should win both the Columbus and Buffalo games, but you never know with these Islanders.
