The 76ers Should Build Around Tyrese Maxey Instead

Tyrese Maxey can provide the Sixers with a piece to build around.

The 2024-25 season is early. Yet, due to the situation at hand with Joel Embiid and Paul George, the franchise should consider building around Tyrese Maxey. Joel Embiid and Paul George are on load management plans because of their injury history. With the current signings this offseason, what would a solid team built around Tyrese Maxey look like?

Tyrese Maxey’s Potential

Tyrese Maxey is one of the best guards in the NBA. His ability to grow each season is encouraging. Throughout the offseason, Maxey has received nothing but accolades from his teammates for his work ethic and leadership skills during training camp. Though the Sixers started the 2024-25 season on a low note, the team’s guard has the potential to lead the team to the playoff series. Since Joel Embiid isn’t playing back-to-back games, this is the chance for Tyrese Maxey to translate his offseason leadership accolades to the court. Also, the 23-year-old’s performance without Joel Embiid was good last season.

Last season, Maxey averaged 26.3 points, 5.6 assists, and 3.7 rebounds when Embiid wasn’t on the court. The 23-year-old’s best performance without Embiid was against the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Maxey constantly improved throughout last season even when the team’s performance wasn’t good enough. Thus, Maxey has the potential to be better this season with the new talent the franchise acquired during the offseason.

What a Team Built Around Maxey Would Look Like

The Philadelphia 76ers’ season opener set the tone for the Sixers fans on how the team’s performance would look in the next 70+ games. The Sixers should be looking to clinch the fourth to sixth seed without their MVP. During the 2024 offseason, the franchise offered contracts to elite players who could cover up for Embiid’s absence.

These players included Paul George, Andre Drummond, Guerschon Yabusele, Caleb Martin, Eric Gordon, and Reggie Jackson. Thus, a starting five that should work well with Maxey include Yabusele, Oubre Jr., Drummond, and Caleb Martin. Unfortunately, Paul George is on a load management plan as well. Aside from that, this is a solid starting five led by Maxey.

The Downside Of Building Around Maxey

The offensive burden will be heavy on Tyrese Maxey. At the moment, the team is still trying to integrate and work cohesively. Against the Bucks, the team fell short after the first quarter, so Maxey put up many shots to try and reduce the margin. In the end, Maxey went 10-for-31 from the field and 2-of-9 from downtown.

There is also no experienced backup center for Andre Drummond. To build a solid team around Maxey, Guerschon Yabusele needs to start as a power forward while Caleb Martin plays the small forward position. Also, Oubre Jr. can handle the shooting guard position. Yet, what should counter this setback is Paul George’s availability or lack thereof.

The Upside Of Building Around Maxey

Joel Embiid and Paul George can take more time off. These high-priced vets are the Sixers’ most valued assets. Also, the franchise plans to manage their workload and prepare them for the 2025 playoffs. Thus building around Maxey helps the franchise achieve this goal.

This experience is for Tyrese Maxey as he develops as a veteran. The franchise should use this opportunity to enhance the team’s overall performance. The Sixers guard is 23 years old, thus the franchise has about 10 years or more to assemble a more solid team when Embiid isn’t capable of playing.

Final Thoughts

If the Sixers should consider building around Tyrese Maxey, then the franchise should determine who to let go and offer a contract next offseason. This also means that Philly fans should expect a competitive playoff run as the franchise reviews their team-building strategy. Building around Maxey is a long-term investment that should yield better results in the future.
